Adirondack Teardrop

Postby mikeschn » Sun Nov 02, 2014 9:07 am

Has anyone seen a teardrop with a strange front end like I have shown here?

I've fashioned the front area to have the same approximate angle as an adirondack chair, but to fit a person's head in there I had to move the curve way up...

There's nothing quite like that in the Hall of Fame.

Auto manufacturers call that ergonomics. Add a dropped floor for the feets and you may have something. I haven't seen one but I wish I had your CAD program. Can't justify buying one for one or two builds.

Jim,

$99 gets you started: http://www.punchcad.com/p-27-viacad-2d3d-v9.aspx

or even free: http://www.sketchup.com/

I thought about the dropped floor, but I have a 1 piece queen sized mattress, and I didn't really want to chop it up! Besides you could think of it as an adirondack chair with an adirondack ottoman.

Mike,

Where in MI are you? I'm just north of Fort Wayne. Did you ever finish your foamie? I read the 40 pages of your build and we are left hanging. Kind of like having to wait all summer to find out who shot JR. If you are old enough to remember that. :)

Mike,

Its hard to tell, is there enough height in the back of the sit up area to allow you to shift the mattress forward / up during the day to allow use as a couch, then shift it back down at night for sleeping? This might allow for the drop floor without cutting the mattress. It might even be possible to put in a hinged floor that would allow you to lift the knees a few inches. It might require some method of fastening the mattress in place to prevent it sliding back down.

What do you see the area at the foot of the bed inside the cabin to be used as? I wonder if shifting the back of the sitting area aft and filling the resulting opening with shelves for clothing would be more useful?

I really like this profile. Have you got overall dims?

The thing most unique other than a sloped back about an Adirondack chair is the seat shape. I have not seen a teardrop like you have drawn but I use two pillows as support to get the same sloped back sitting potion in my teardrop without the seat benefits. I just sit father forward and have a shelf and headboard storage behind my head. The further forward sitting position keeps me from hitting my head most of the time. I started with Benroy front shape but pushed it out for additional storage and shelves similar but different that what you have shown

Interesting concept and I like profile and the front curved design, but it seems like the cabin is extra long inside. What about moving the slanted back forward and using the space behind for storage, or shorten the cabin interior so the person doesn't have to sit down and scoot back so far. Maybe moving the door forward would help.

Hey kayakdlk,

You're right. The cabin is extra long. I had to add an extra 2 feet to get the dog beds in there by our feet.

This mockup is only 4' wide, the real McCoy will be 5' or 5 1/2' wide.

P.S. How many people here have those red and blue 3d glasses?

No I don't have much in the way of dimensions yet. I do know it sits on a 10' long trailer. I'll throw some numbers on it first chance I get. But the design is still changing. Right now I am debating if I want to add 4" to the height where the door is, so that I don't keep knocking myself out every time I stick my head in the trailer. :?

Clever Mike. Should be pretty aero with the front top being closer to your TV and the long, gently sloping back.

As for the Adirondack chair seat shape, you could probably simulate it (without a drop floor) with a custom made pillow.

Have you thought about small side pullouts for the dogs so you don't have to make the trailer longer?

I do like that design. I have been reading on here for some time, and I was thinking of something like this. For rrainy days you could sit in the tear and watch a movie or read. I like it!!!

Here is a link to a series of videos that I put together showing how to design a teardrop in SketchUp. It is a fairly simple program to use. Another big plus is that it is free.

I read somewhere that the ideal angle for the back of a bench is 97 degrees so I tilted my headboard back accordingly. Lost a little storage space but kept the outer profile that I wanted. The bottom two rows of openings on the headboard will have inset doors with flat hinges and magnetic catches. Top row will remain open to act as a shelf. [Image
