Has anyone ever owned their own campground?

General Discussion about almost anything Teardrop or camping related

I agree, traveling and seeing this beautiful country thrills me! I think a workcamper would be the best. If I have a job at a campground with my daughter than my 13 yr. old son will be sitting at home. If I can be a work camper for several weeks they both can come along and enjoy the outdoors.

I live for the warm months...just being outside finding new places to explore, meeting new folks and enjoying our beautiful country makes me happy! I totally understand Becca. You are so lucky to live in a warm climate. One day I may have to join ya, lol.

Come on down Doris! The only reason I like Florida is year round camping. Ok, the beaches have a little something to do with it too.

As far as i am concerned, I already own the best campground in SW Ohio. It has one campsite with electric. Its wooded and has a stream at the bottom of the ravine. Its quiet, with the occasional raccoon, opossum, coyote and deer passing through. It is very conveniently located. Its called "My Back Yard".

And, live very happily in the same old scenerio, with the same old view of mother nature in my face every day of my life. Yep, that's what kind of person I am. ;)

When I ask myself that question I come back with the answer that I like travel, but in all honesty, I wonder if that answer is to some extent a rationalization due to limited funds.

I would not like a large campground like Becca referred...what I would want is a boat launch on a fishing lake with room for a small beer/bread/bait/ice store and maybe a few camping spots...something wayyyyyy off the beaten track...around here, that means back in the swamps...way back in the swamps............

 You gonna need some pontoons! 8) I have for years fantasized about getting on a boat and going deep into the Atchafalaya.

A small private fishing camping spot would be wonderful.

I had to look up Port Susan.
That is not what I want.
I want a spot out in the middle of no where - Eastern Washington

Try Terlingua Ranch in the mountains of Far West Texas.

That's as remote as it gets here in Texas (the World).

Its in Brewster County: population 8000 or so in an area the size of two U.S. states combined.

We are lucky to live here. There are lots of places to get away to. We can go to the eastern part of the state, and camp in sagebrush or pines, or on the west side, in the dark woods or on a foggy old log landing.

I do like the bait shop idea, but only with a couple of camping spots so I could close down and go out on the water too! I'd need a Gone Fishing or Gone Floating sign for the door.

Hmmm. Now that is a thought. Have just enough sites to keep up a "company store" with alternatives limited by distance. or should it be

I think about the places like where Pickin in the Pines is held. It is private property and there are events a few times per year. I actually have a plan to do exactly this. While the campground is not the main focal point, living in the woods is, and having a few sites setup for gatherings, and music is just a great by product.

I like the vintage trailer idea, that would be something cool to do with all the trailers you would build instead of selling them off. I had thought about running an RV park too, but felt there too many hassles for me.

I haven’t owned a camp ground, but my maternal grandparents did…in the mid-1920s. It was in the town where I was born, Ocala, Florida, just across the highway from where they lived all their lives, and I lived there part time as a child. This is a part of Ocala history.

In the photo below, you’ll notice that the road is dirt, not pavement. But, the sign at the left says it is under construction. Look at the RVs of the roaring 20s. One,in the center, looks like a long bux.

In this photo, are my Mom (far left), my aunt Mary and Uncle Leslie. My Grandpa (Thomas Perkins) is seated on the rustic chair.

My wife and I managed an small campground out side the Texas Renaissance Festival for several years. There was an odd collection of old canned hams, slide in campers and a couple of larger travel trailers. Most of these campers were either used by the property owners at one time, a few were abandoned by the owners at the end of the season. Besides renting out the campers we had RV and tent sites which were also rented. There was a 3 bay shower house and a fire pit in front of my trailer for nightly gatherings. The campground was only open to vendor/artists and performers of the festival and only for approx 10 weeks a year (the festival runs 8 weekends). There were a lot of repeat guests and each season was a bit of a "family" reunion for us. We really enjoyed the experience and spend a few minutes each year missing it since we moved out of the area. I would take nothing for that experience but would not really want to own a conventional year round campground.
