way back in the last century when I went to school; our school offered "home economics" as a class but they would not let "boys" take the class.

To be fair most of us Jocks wouldn't have anyway; but now way past being a jock, I wish I had learned more about cooking and even sewing
I didn't want to make anything and show it at the county fair like most of the girls did with their sewing but it would come in handy now.

I think there should be a requirement that says before any man can get married he must know how to make a simple meal, sew on a button, wash & iron clothes and run a vaccum.
now picking up clothes left on the floor well that's a lot to ask............ :frightened:

I learned some of these skills while in the Navy they wouldn't allow my mommy on board the ship and they required your uniform to be squared away (looking sharp).

I thank my mom whenever I can.......

Her philosophy was a man should want a wife not need one !

I called her Friday to ask what spices go best in stew. ( I already had them setting on the counter) I just wanted an excuse to call her and I did relish a second opinion.

As a young child I remember sewing on buttons by the hours on a small piece of material just for fun.

I have been cooking full meals since I was 10 while watching my younger brother and sister as mom worked outside the home.

So thanks mom ! and to mom's everywhere for those little life lessons.
Growing older but not up !

Debbie does most of the cooking from scratch, home or camping. i love camp cooking. On the bad work day night, or when my thumb is really hurting, and sunday mornings, randy will cook, but it generally pizza night, or bag o meal. He has gotten pretty good at doctored up spaghetti sauce. And he is a spectacular clearer upper. I cook he cleans, which i hate, works well for us too.

Now days most schools do not even offer home economics-and unless they were taught by their mothers or grandmothers, most girls, let alone guys could not boil water. Jamie Oliver, who some know as "the Naked Chef"-not because of his dress, but because he doesn't use all the heavy sauces many chefs do, wrote in the foreword of one of his cook books something to the effect that 20 years ago, there would not have been a need for this cookbook, because everyone knew basic kitchen skills. I really started to improve my skills mainly because much of the food in restaurants today is just bad. I figured out that If I want bad food, served by a surly grouch, I could do it myself, and save some money to boot. :)

I do 99.9% of the cooking. My grandson's idea of cooking is opening a lunchables and a capri sun.
Did a ham in the DO right after Christmas an no one complained :)

hundreds of years ago I took home Econ, In North Dakota, the boys taking shop, we both swapped and took a week of snow survival. During that time we girls learned to change a tire, check the oil and how to saw, use a screwdriver and drill while the boys learned a little cooking, how to sew on that button and how to iron . We got scored on participation!!!! It was the best class I ever had!!! I knew that when I had children I would teach them now both my sons know how to use a sewing machine read, follow a recipe and can iron their own shirt. :D

I cook. Started about 30 years ago when my wife was doing income taxes. I'd get home from work in the afternoon, and she'd take off for the evening shift and worked most weekends. I had child care, cooking, and grocery shopping.

Duke does 99% of the cooking, both at home and at camp. Fortunately, he loves to cook and is great at it.

I'm a decent cook, and I have a few specialties that I like to cook, but baking is my passion. At home, supper is typically ready when I get home from work, as he gets home a bit before I do. He also packs my lunch in the morning. It's definitely Duke's kitchen. I operate out of my Hoosier cabinet, where my baking goodies live.

I'm well aware of how spoiled I am. My mom reminds me every chance she gets.

It's great to see so many guys into cooking.

At home the hubbs does the majority of the cooking...he's a good cook! I camp solo or with groups and I really enjoy cooking when out camping. There's just something about being outdoors cooking in cast iron. :ilovecamp:

Here's a rave for the Hoosier Cabinet ! Our's is also still
serving its purpose in the kitchen today. It wouldn't seem
to be a complete kitchen without it.

That's awesome! We just found our Hoosier on Craigslist for a steal. It's in near-new condition and just beautiful for being almost 100 years old. Can't believe our luck. We're actually having our kitchen redone, and removing a couple of the traditional cabinets so we can use the Hoosier instead. Also matching the new cabinets to the rustic Hoosier style so it looks at home.

Screw resale value!

I first cooked on Boy Scout campouts, then I continued to cook when mom started a business she ran out of the house. she would yell instructions to me in the kitchen while I was trying to put together the meal. So I learned to cook family meals, then she taught me how to clean, sew and do laundry. She kept telling me that "no girl's gonna want you, so better learn to do things yourself". (Thanks for that boost of confidence, mom) My dad also made sure I learned basic man skills. My friends used to joke with me and tell me that I'd make some woman a wonderful wife    . So I do almost all the cooking, but my wife does most of the cleaning and most of the laundry and I take care of home repairs and remodels. I think I turned out just right (except I need to learn how to weld). I'd make a good bachelor, except I love my wife's companionship.
