Designing a Puffie Standie?

General Discussion about almost anything Teardrop or camping related

The Door

Postby jml79 » Sun Aug 10, 2008 4:06 am

I love the design work on the door but in the interest of simplicity I would just leave it small. I have used this arrangement on a truck bed camper with a pop top and it worked fairly well. I am not traipsing in and out of the trailer that often and I would also be able to just hop in for a sleep without raising the roof if I wanted. Just my take but beautiful work guys.

Awesome work guys. Do you think it would be possible to design a standie that would weight less than 1,000lbs?

As of now my estimate for trailer weight on my future build looks about 1200lbs. That's holding the weight down as much as I can. I will use a sandwich construction every i can.

I agree with you on the simplicity part of a smaller door, but I need to look more to the future as a I get older and require a little more comfort. I had been toying with the bigger door option when Mikes suggestions sparked some more brain activity. The TTT can still be built with the short door and the mods added at a latter date if needed. As i get to the mock up stage i'll make a choice.
As you noted one of the nicer things about this type of design is you can crawl in during bad times if needed without raising the roof.

Don't get to discouraged, most on the forum will tell you there is a lot to choose from here. All the TD and TTT have excellent merit on there on. If you can't find one that really suits your need, work on a design yourself and ask for help. This is a excellent resource of knowledge. Be patient and
Good Luck

The Escape Hatch is only about 800 pounds. You'd be able to pull that with your car. :?

This is just about the smallest package I can come up with as far as the floor plan goes.

It's 66" wide, and can be built on a HF 4x8 trailer, if you stretch the trailer a little bit.

The bed can convert into a table like the Generic ET. The bathroom is also similar to the Generic ET, only instead of being 36" wide, it's only 30" wide.

The space between the bed and the storage counter is only about 26" so it's pretty tight there too. Both the entry door, and the bathroom door can be 24", although I wouldn't recommend a door for the bathroom. A curtain might be a better option. Oh yes, it's a dry bathroom with a porta potty. No shower.

I'll start on the profile next.

Well that looks good. I'm wondering about interior height as well. I don't need much since I'm 5'5". I also am not going to put a galley in - just walls, floor and ceiling as far as the basic design so that should eliminate some weight. How much space do you think the porta-potti requires to be useful? 2.5' x 2.5'? Is that a ledge in the bathroom to elevate to potti or is there a storage tank under there?

When you turn the bathroom to the other side, you can make a second outside door and forget the inside door. That gives you more inside-space. Most of the time you use this kind of trailers with a tent infront. And when there is an extra door in the outside, you can make at the inside of the trailer a little hanging cubboard.

The interior height can be set at build time. I'm planning a little bit of a vertical profile on both the front and the rear. You just change the height of the vertical portion, based on how high you want the trailer to be.

the Generic ET has a 36" square bathroom, and it's more than comfortable. The bathroom in the Generic Standie is only 30" wide, but should still be plenty comfortable. I had a trailer once with a 24" wide bathroom, and that was tight.

I can't get rid of the ledge. That's where the chassis is. So the best thing to do is set the porta potty on that ledge, like I did...

Ok, I couldn't figure out what you meant by chassis at first, but thats a footwell where the potti is right? and the ledge is the frame of the trailer correct?

Thanks Mike. Can you make a quick profile for the design you came up with a few posts up? I'm dumb and don't have a CAD program.... To be under 1,000lbs, its going to have to be built as an ultralight. Think it can be done?

Yes, I can. That's been the plan all along.
