As a joke one April fools day a friend of mine put Peanut Butter (the crunchy kind) on his shoe and was sitting around the outside fire pit some one made the comment that he stepped in crap......Their looks were priceless when he licked it

Oh Whitney

Our cat does the same........the longer we stay awy the happier he is to see us and the friendlier he is for the next two weeks.

Yes, Steve. Since all the terrorists incidents that have happened, a passport is now very necessary.

Here's some medically related things that I'm not certain of...:

- Canada has national health care; so, if you get sick while you're down here or get a terrible tooth ache and need to see a doctor or dentist; or, heaven forbid, end up in a hospital down here, who picks up the bill? If you don't know, it's best to find out now and it would be good to write it here so other Canadians will know, too.

- Also, is there a difference in health care from province to province? In other words, If someone from Quebec has to see a doctor and someone from the Yukon has to see a doctor, here in the USA, will both sets of finance problems be paid for in the same way or will one or both of you be stuck paying some or all of a US medical bill?

- Here, in the USA, if you become unconscious and/or need surgery or need life support, the hospital looks for next of kin or a living will; so, it would be best to plan for that, too. (Okay, so you're coming with your significant other, who might be able to take care of that; but what if that person, heaven forbid, is unconscious or dead?) What do they do in Canada? Is it the same as in the USA?

biziedizie wrote:Wow Sharon I don't think I want to get sick in the States! For us we just get extended health insurance so that we're covered.
In Canada it doesn't matter what happens to us as long as we have medical which costs next to nothing we're covered.
Even if we have no coverage we still get treated. Our health care is pretty good.
I was rushed in to hospital in June, emerg surgery, cancer. Every bill, script, in home nurses, after care, chemo treatments, cab fair, even money if I needed has been covered by health care.
Our system is there to help and for when we need it.

From what I read above, Steve, you are covered here in the USA by Canada's health care, regardless of province and you have checked on all that?

What about the next of kin/power of attorney question? How is that handled in Canada and in the USA, if you're visiting from Canada?

FYI, here in the USA, it depends upon what kind of insurance you have and who the insurance provider is. So, if any US citizens are reading this, it's best to call your insurance provider and check before you cross the border into another country.

Some people can't afford insurance as it can be very expensive, especially if ones employer doesn't pick up any of the cost or provide a group policy discount (think thousands of $); plus the insurance company can deny coverage based on ones health status. That's why the government keeps trying to pass some sort of health care reform act. We aren't there yet and may never be completely there. Denial of health care insurance based on ones health status is slated to be outlawed in 2014. That would be one step towards better health care. We'll see what happens with that law when we get there, whether it will actually take effect or be rescinded or modified.

Another good-to-know question:
If an uninsured US citizen has to see a doctor in Canada, are they covered by the Canadian health system? Will a doctor even treat them? Who pays the bill?

After reading this "Cross boarder stuff", I placed a phone call to the post office and (my fellow employees at) the supreme court. The cost is the same (not even an employee discount :x )
Passport card is only $30, OK, not bad, hey it's good for 10 years.
Uh wait, there's more? Oh, I see,... you'll take my picture :snappy: for the passport card for $15 $>

Oh? and a processing fee? But of course, why not, here, have some more, $> ..... how much would you like this time? Gracious, $25 for YOU to allow ME to complete this form MYSELF, give it to YOU so that YOU can do ME the honor of sending it in for me? Did I mention I work for the same government entity that you do? Our paychecks come from the same place you know? But yet we give you free flu shots? Ok, I'll shut up now.

 So lets see, that was $30 for the card, $15 for the pic, and $25 to file it for a grand total of $70 each!!! $> :x
.....and this is just so we can pull our li'l camper into Canada folks. :? Heaven forbid we'd want to take a plane, that would be an additional $110 each  May just have to settle for driving close to the border and wave. :NC
 I could drop her off at the rest park or something before I crossed the border to camp for a few days and pick her up on the way back, ......... :BE :O Sorry My Love, Just Kidding.....
I'll have to think on this a while........ :poop:

Hi Whitney
Well worth the money!
Here in Canada we pay $75.00 every 5 years to get and renew a passport.
You have to put everything into perspective........today I spent TWICE that amount on lunch at the pub, beer for the afternoon, and pizza for supper!!
I will probably get 200 times that much in fun from just one year of Cross Boarder travel!!!!

I know that the Docs will treat you here, they do bill you though. The trouble is that most people don't pay their bills and it just makes everything harder for those that do.

Thanks for your replies, Steve. :)
