See how a (German) T@b is built

Postby angib » Wed May 16, 2007 9:13 am

This video shows T@bs being built in the German factory, as well as being a general T@b advert. The voice-over is all in German, but the pictures are in English.....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rbDq5S_9NKk

Merkans may need a safety warning with this video - it shows a T@b being towed by a VW Golf Estate, which is clearly an impossible load for such a small car to tow. Isn't it?

They must have filmed me building my trailer--and built their's the opposite! And a 28 hour build time? They obviously don't understand the joy of stringing out the build over a two year period.

Actually, I think all the builders should watch this to get input on construction steps and processes. It's a great video. Wish it covered just a little more of the process instead of following the campers, but it is advertisement.

Thanks again, Andrew.
Still graced with two eyes and ten fingers (due in no small part to luck!).

Just when you think a problem is solved, an uglier result replaces it.

It is cool when they showed the classic T@B. Even the T@B is a copy of an old trailer

My local Audi dealer thinks my hitch receiver is for a bike rack. They seem to feel that towing a trailer with a 3.0 A4 will cause it to fall to pieces. In reality, I pull the Kampmaster at 70 on the highway, in sixth gear, and I have to look back from time to time to make sure the camper is still there -- I can't feel it most of the time.

I'm sure VW of America frowns upon trailers, too.

In the UK, the 3.2 gas engine is rated by Audi to tow a 1650lb unbraked trailer or a 4400lb braked trailer. Licensing law for new drivers would limit them to a braked trailer less than 85% of the car's kerbweight, which would be 'only' 2900lb. Either way, it's more than one or two bikes!

But the hitch weight is likely to be limited to 4-5% of the trailer weight - another Yurpeen habit that is scientifically proved in the US to cause an instant accident......

I have watched this movie a few times and at best guess with the avaible video they have a staff on the line of 23 men at 8 hours and 20 m to build that woeks out at 191.66 man hours.
this in no way accounts for all the sections that seem to be premade by others as there is only 1 section(bed base) being built on site all though i would belive the kitchen is also factory made.
Now given that most home builders would if the truth be known maby get to there project TD 1 day a week and then if lucky get 6 hours done on that day.
we get, by there build times a build time of 31 days or just under 8 months even with out the time needed to collect and prefab the sections so up to a year or so for us is dam quick compared to modern assembly line times, so in reality we get a home made masterpiece in our eyes 1/5 if not better cheeper than there plastic fantastic, can be pulled by a small car and something that generates as much if not more intrest every time you camp.
All Hail the homebuilder..
Yea thou I walk through the shadowdy depths of my shed I shall fear no evil as that which grows beneath my hands be of my dreams, be of my joy and shall forever be HOME.
Build with CARE, TIME will tell.OH and I changed my website in dec07

Yup, but just think of all the torque they produced!

Hey, I know of text translators, like Babelfish, but have you found a picture translation web site? Or are you just showing off that you can translate pictures to Spanish in your head?

Audi offers factory hitch receivers in Europe, too. But here, only the Q7 and the Allroad can be fitted with a receiver from Audi. And, I had to look up the part numbers to tell the Audi dealer what to order for my Dad's Allroad, because the dealer didn't know a hitch was available for that "crossover" vehicle.

Here in the States, there seems to have developed an attitude that you need a "truck" to pull a trailer. Back in the 50s and 60s, people pulled trailers all the time with passenger cars, but over time, towing became the job of a truck or SUV, and towing with a car fell out of favor.

My Audi tows my TD without any problems.
