Need an opinion...its a real coin toss???

Postby len19070 » Tue Nov 22, 2011 7:42 pm

I have a really nice "66" Scotty that really suits all my needs.

Image[/URL]Image

But...

I haven't built a new trailer for myself in 2 years and I'm gettin itchy.

People start new builds for a lot of both sane and ridiculous reasons.

Many of my projects have been started for some really weird beginnings.

i.e. WOW! I have these really Big Skates and a wrecked Sail Boat....Lets build an "Ice Boat"

Or,

I found this really neat "Fan Blade" and my old VW won't pass inspection anymore...."Lets build an "Air Boat"

Both true stories by the way.

Well now I have some windows, an Odd sized axle and 2 Junior twin Mattresses (32X72")

I have always wanted a second small trailer as I do a lot of not necessarily over night Camping trips as overnight events where I need just a place to sleep....a basic trailer.

But now with the gifted "Odd sized axle" I can build either a 54" wide cabin (the size of a conventional "Double" Mattress) with sleeping front to back and external fenders.

OR

A 6' wide "over the wheel build with the sleeping arrangement side to side. Making the front bunk a "Goucho" set up.

I have done "Over the wheel builds" before very successfully.

ImageImage

My decision is, 54" wide front to back sleeping conventional Tear, OR 6' wide rear entrance with a Goucho side to side sleeping and either a 32" wide single or a 60" wide open sleeping area .

Cost, towing & time are not a factor.

Happy Trails

Len

BTW, I have always liked this profile with or without the fenders.

Len just build 54" front to bvack with the fenders outside and have your basic trailer, seem thats what your leaning towards .

Looks like this might be tall enough to make a gaucho with plenty of head room...I loved having the extra floor space in mine with the bed across!

Len,

Neat profile!

I think fenders add some class, and it is a lot easier to see around the trailer while towing/switching lanes.

If you go 54" wide, you might consider that the thickness of your sheets and blankets request a couple more inches.

If length/height of the mattress is a consideration, an inner spring futon mattress (just as comfortable as a regular inner spring mattress) is several inches shorter than a standard mattress.

You've already got a BIG trailer Len, if you just want something to sleep in, I'd go with the wheels on the outside and build a very basic bed on wheels. If it grows too much it will soon be almost as big as your Scotty and therefore defeat the purpose you intended it for. Right?

Len, I absolutely love the profile of this little trailer. What is it? Is it your own design or is it based on a vintage trailer? If so, which one? Do you have pics of the inside. What are the dimensions? You know I am already thinking about my next build!!

Oops, I just clicked on the picture (I may be slow, Jennie.....) and it took me to your album with all the Mini-Shasta pictures. This is one cool little trailer. It appears to just be a really unique teardrop. Very cool.

Well seeing how you said you just need it to sleep in and not really for camping 54" would be my choice. Tows easy, see around it easy, parks easier and just about any where and fenders are cool!

I'm with Becky on this one. Keep it simple, and go for the fenders on the outside. Like she said, if it gets too big you might as well take the Shasta.

Of course you could always make a Grasshopper style design.... 8)

....gaucho couch w/door in the rear...would be a more unique camper since the style is not often done...I believe Scotty made a slanted rear wall/entry...I have always liked that style...for a quick overnighter with some inside amenities, you wouldn't need to set up anything outside for a "quickie"..................
