Clearance between matress and walls??

Postby Cdash » Fri Dec 02, 2011 1:53 pm

Getting ready to buy steel for the frame and get to building, when yet another question comes up while trying to find the answer for another question. I thought I was all set on dimensions and I see something that makes me wonder.

How much distance, if any, is best to have between the matress and the walls?

I am designing around a matress size and I was thinking about 2" on either side to make it easy to get the sheets on, but I saw somone else mention 1/2" on either side and got me wondering if 2" was just going to turn into a trap for socks and other goodies.

Any words of wisdom for this?
Thanks,

Craig

I cut the foam mattress in my last trailer to the same width as the interior of the trailer, minus a 1/2".

My new build is 60.5" wide inside, so I'll have a queen size foam mattress @ 60" wide.

If your useing a box spring I would leave more room then a foam mattress, so you can make your bed. You can fold the corners up on a foam mattress to make your bed so it can have a tighter fit.

Woud you use a box spring in a TD. Wouldn't that take up a lot of room or am I missing something.Larryw

A slip fit would be best, not a snug fit.

Add a half inch to the mattress dimension or the mattress will move around. Then there will be a cavity to fill.

I make my bed neatly at home, square corners and all. But in camping I just get things sorta flat...good enough.

I have a queen size Ozark (Walmart) air mattress, snugly fit side to side, extra room at ends. No problems encountered inflating or sheeting the mattress. It is comfortable.
Happy trails,

I think I have an 1/2" on each side of the mattress for clearance. I wanted room for the sheets and comforter without it being too tight. Also makes it easier to make the bed. YMMV

i have no space. my mattress is a wall to wall, and slightly pushing that. but zero space. does make making the bed a bit of a hassle. i suppose that is why no one has seen it made yet.

If you share the bed with a large dog, he can get stuck between the mattress, the wall and the overhead cabinets. This will cause a dog quake to happen during the night or the wee hours of the morning.

I grabbed him under his front elbows and pulled him out. We went back to sleep.

It really depends on how many blankets you use/the temps you camp in.
We use a standard sheet set and a quilt most of the time.

An extra half inch helps.
In colder weather we add 2 more blankets.
An inch isn't too much extra space.

Agree with most everyone else, about one half-inch (that's what we have), 1 inch would be the most I would go.

Good luck with you build......share pics please!

My mattress is tight to the walls. I have a tendency to roll with the covers when I sleep, so a real tight fit minimizes this. It might make it a little harder to make the bed, but the covers stay put.

Mine butts up to the wall. Only problem is that the bedding is constantly having to be pushed back in at bottom of door because it interferes with door closing. Considered trimming the matress back an inch or two but not sure if that would fix it. And my wife likes the look of the bedspread folded tightly under the mattress as shown below (form over function- go figure!).

Camp Inn puts elastic door skirts on theirs to keep the bedding in and out of the door closing. Not sure if they sell them, anyone know how to make these?
