trailer design and layout

Postby loaderman » Thu Jul 12, 2012 9:52 am

Basically a teardrop is sleeping and storage on wheels.
Love the idea only thing is what if it rains?
Anyone know of any designs/plans/ideas that uses a layout where you could have an awning/add-a-room on the side and have the kitchen and entry door on that side.
That way if it was raining you could be sheltered.

Tried drawing something out but not getting a good layout.

Most people use a pop-up type canopy over the rear of their tear, usually over the galley area. A 10x10 canopy, depending on the size of your teardrop, can generally cover both the galley and the door. You can get screen enclosures and solid walls for these canopies also so you can have an enclosed area for bad weather.

A canopy over the rear would not cover the entry door on the side.
Need a L shaped canopy?

My 10 x 10 first up has been a "Don't leave home without it " item.

It has been a living room ~ a dining room ~ and a privacy changing area. Most of the time it is a shade or wind/rain break for the galley. I can no imagine teardrop camping without it.

These illustrate my problem, they only cover the back or side need both under cover in the basic teardrop layout.
Have seen using big canopy and covering the whole thing, I guess that would work.

this teardrop has a custom side tent on one side and an awning on the other with a pop up covering the kitchen area more for shade from the sun but also works for rain

If the rain is a big issue then you might consider a small standie type of trailer, the foot print is smaller than the teardrop

My awning covers my door, and gives me enough room at the back for cooking. I also have room to sit along side the trailer to eat and stay out of the sun or rain.

It is not L-shaped.

I would think a 12X12 canopy, positioned so the tongue sticks out a bit into the weather, would give plenty of shelter for the door(s) and the galley

This worked for me, but I wouldn't want to put it up when it was raining. It's not a fast set up.

If you've got a 10x10 or a 12x12 canopy and a 5x8 trailer, and you're only putting it under the canopy from the entry door back, it can be done. At least that's what all the folks at Elk Neck State park were doing last year when it was pouring down rain.
:rainy:
As for me, I'm a big fat sissy so when it comes to the point that I can't keep dry between the teardrop and the canopy, I'm finding a nice hotel.

After a few rainy trips, I invested in the Coleman 13'x13 canopy, which easily covers everything including plenty of galley space , my door and room for sitting. It wasn't cheap and it's a bit of a heavy mutha, but it sure does what I want it to do. Very sturdy and the leg footprint is 10x10, so it's no more cumbersome to put up than the typical shelter (it has arms that extend at the corners for extra width) and I imagine you could use any 10' canopy walls on it if wanted more enclosure. Next time it's up, I will take a picture of the whole setup.

I have found that an SUV tent by Napier Sportz was just the thing for that rear galley hatch. I use it to shelter the open hatch and as a warm heated (with Coleman Black Cat) to extend my camping season. I also have a 15' Coleman Event Shelter and have the side panels for it to shelter the side door of my tear during bad weather, hot sunny weather, or cold nights. We may try to get away from tents when we move to a teardrop bedroom and breakfast but the SUV tent and Event Shelter are really very comfortable although not for every one. I have had much experience with many kinds of tents so they don't present much trouble for me compared to the comfort.

Hi loaderman,

One approach would be to have a slide out galley similar to parnolds
design here:
viewtopic.php?f=50&t=47901

And a lot of the great Australian and South African off-road campers
have the same.Good for inspiration:
http://www.ozzieoffroad.com.au/
http://www.australianoffroadcampers.com ... -road.html
http://www.jurgenssafari.co.za/
http://www.conqueror.co.za/commander.php
http://www.imagine-trailvan.co.za/Comfo ... rview.html
http://www.sprite.co.za - Look at Tourer SC & SP.

Here is another style from an ebay listing on 081011:
95145

Here is a very interesting custom built Australian nontraditional
style TD from AUebay on 030512:
95146

Keep in mind their curbside is opposite ours. There is a slide out
galley and on the other side is a built in fold out shower set up.
There is a Porta Potti inside too. Also the side door/hatch is
almost the whole side of the TD ! Most of Australia is a much
warmer climate evidently, as most of their TTs etc. have large
ventilating roof hatches . An adaptation for here would be to keep
that large side opening/hatch but imbed, in that, a TD style door so you
could have the choice of using either size opening. I have more pics
of it if you are interested but I didn't want to load them all into my
album at the moment.

Happy planning.

Cheers,
Norm/mezmo

I've seen two 10x10 EZ-Ups used together... butted up at the galley hinge. That covers the camper and puts the area behind the galley under cover, too.
