The biggest teardrop ever built?

Postby doris s. » Mon Jul 29, 2013 8:36 pm

So what's the size of the biggest teardrop ever built? I was thinking about building a cargo conversion, then I thought a standy would be great because I can make that lovely teardrop shape, however a standy won't fit through the garage door. So now I am thinking about a teardrop that is 7 wide, and 12 long. A 7 wide would allow for sleeping crosswise which would leave room for a sitting area and a porti-potty. Any one build a teardrop this large before? Would I need a double axle trailer?

Check out Joseph Hansen's 1963 BeeLine Foamie Hybrid. I'd link it in here, but I don't know how on the Tapatalk App. Just do a search.

Hi Doris,

I have no idea about someone building a TD of that size.

Whether you have a have a single axle or duel is the weight of what you build.

Just a guess, I'd say a single axle is good for about 1,000 pounds. Over that I'd say a duel axle would be appropriate.

Go to a place that sells trailer and ask them about the weight rating of various trailers, then you'd know for sure.

You'll have to figure out the weight of the items you are using to build and add to your unit to decide what you'll in the way of axles.

I started with a single axle boat trailer rated for just under 3K. Look at my build, although probably not considered a "teardrop". 12'x7', roughly based of Grant Whips "Campster 12" design. I have a queen bed that will convert to a dinette, and will have storage closets in the nose.

This ~7x12 TD was on reno CL in June:

I think it was also in one of the two TnTTT For Sale threads too
as a 'family size TD and a kit for another' or some such.

The Maxitear is the largest I have seen but then again when it gets that big it is a standie.

My single axle cargo trailer has a 3000 # GVW. You don't need tandem axles

"Biggest Teardrop" sounds like an oxymoron to me.

Cheers,

With a dropped floor, you can create a standie that fits in the garage. I'm about 5 ft 11 and can almost stand in mine (I stoop slightly). My wife is about 4 Inches shorter and can stand up all the way.

As well as the Maxitear, there is also the 1935 Airstream design sold as plans:

Something of a can of worms...but define "teardrop". :dead:

Do you mean what is an official teardrop?

What is teardrop shaped?
What people call teardrops because they don't know or care?

The largest production teardrop was the Fleet Cabin Car.
The largest homebuilt may be the Maxitear.
The largest teardrop if you don't know or care is anybody's guess as it could be anything from a bus to a trailer to a boat to an airplane...

Doris, You can make it out of foam and won't have to park it in the garage and for up keep buy a gallon of paint. you can make it as large as you want. just a thought!!!

+1 on the drop floor, although depending on your trailer frame configuration this can be tricky. My drop floor isn't quite as deep as I wanted because supports for my young go all the way back to the main frame. I can just stand in mine at 5'11", and it just fits in my garage.

Doris, A garage-able standy design might be worth considering. There is one design that is tiny (built on a 6 x 4 trailer frame), very rounded, and amazingly has a kitchen, bathroom and full bed, but the kitchen is in the interior -- there is no hatch in the back. The plan uses a dropped floor pan to achieve a low overall height. I have the thread bookmarked on my home computer and will post it when I get home from work.

The Little Guy T@B has a version with rear kitchen, a la teardrop, but is not garage-able.

The design below (related thread is here) is also nice and more 'teardroppy' with a galley in back, but I don't know the overall height:
