So,
I've got my little 5x8 Generic Benroy, and I enjoy it about 4 to 5 weekends per year, but it needs some work to improve a few things.
1) The galley hatch has gaps that will require splicing some wood into the sides to close, and then new T molding around the hatch
2) The hatch was cut into the sides similar to the "fredricks" way, but the cut at the top, is angled under the hinge, and water finds a way in. I don't think there is a clean fix for this
3) The roof is 1 layer of luan, and its been coated with pool deck paint. Id like to remove the luan and replace it, then cover with either EPDM or Aluminum.
4) I think one of my doors is bowed, so I probably need to cut a new door and re-trim.
5) I'm considering covering the sides with FRP to cover some imperfections.
6) I tried to use beadboard for my ceiling, and it was a failure, I need to pull it out and replace it with something that bends without splitting
That having been said, I've used it pretty much as is for 3 years now and it really hasn't been a problem. I'm in Southern CA, and its stored covered so it doesn't see much rain ( one time worth talking about in 3 years)
So I have 3 options
1) Just leave it alone and be happy with it as is. If it starts falling apart or does become a problem, then fix it.
2) Prioritize and perform the repairs above as funds, time and energy permit
3) Start over.... I would really like a 5x9, the time and cost to do the work above probably isn't a lot different that cutting a new set of sidewalls and scrapping the old "cabin" and moving everything over. I can pretty much build the shell on the ground, then swap "cabins" and then transfer the parts when I'm ready. I could even make the doors smaller ( mine are 30 x 36) so that I could swap in commercial doors later when I have money.
So what do you guys think is the best approach? is there another alternative I forgot?
