4x8 weight in

Postby Kanook » Thu May 05, 2016 11:20 am

Just curious what weight some other finished loaded or unloaded 4x8 TD builds are coming in at. Trying to get an idea of where mine falls in line. Thanks.
Mine is at 850# loaded.

I built the "Ultralight" that Mike designed way back in 2008 I believe. About 500 lbs without gear, but with a 6" thick memory foam mattress.

my 4x8 empty weighs in at 800 lbs., it is basic traditional build with a commercial built frame w/torsion suspension. Loaded for travel it comes in at 1100/1400 lbs. depending on what I put in it.

This thread has the most comprehensive list and chart of trailer weights reported by their builders. Not all of the builders state that the weight given is from a certified scale with the camper empty, so it might not be completely accurate, but should get you close based on the law of averages.

The quality is remembered long after the price is forgotten, so build your teardrop with the best materials...

Awesome I saw that thread title when I did a search but apparently didn't read it closely.
Looks like I'm right in the ballpark. I was shooting for 750 or less mainly because under 750 doesn't need to be registered here and I don't want a plate on it. I'm skirting the law at 850 but unless a cop wants to follow me to a scale I'm not sure how he'd know. ImageImage

I built my 4x4x8 out of cheap 5mm underpayment and cheap 1x furring strips. The stiffness of the thin sidewalls is from furring strip battens on the outside. The one heavy plywood used is the 3/4" floor, both for utility (motorcycle, furniture, etc...) and a truly flat sleeping platform. It is very light! Towing at speed shows poor aerodynamics.
