Simple awning ideas?

Postby tinman52 » Wed Mar 04, 2020 9:31 am

Hi all

Been thinking about how to attach a simple awning to my TD.....needs to be detachable/easily stowable. I don't want it permanently attached, but some anchor brackets for it on the TD would be okay. Size maybe 6x8 or so? just big enough to sit under or keep the sun out of the camper if I have the door open...
I have one of those pop up 10x10 shelters, but since I travel alone they are tough to set up, plus they are bulky. Looking for some ideas for something simpler.

So what do you all use for an awning? Please post pics or ideas... Thanks!

BTW, my TD is 4.5ishW x 8'L

Sorry no photos but I use an 8x8 is plastic tarp tied to my roof rack. At the far end I found some shock corded replacement tent poles so I can have it high during the day but can also set it up lower at night to direct rain and dew away from the ground by the door. I have to use cords and tent spikes to hold the outer poles so inconvenient to set up but it does roll up to a compact bundle I store in an old camp chair bag.

I built one of these for $60 . Seriously.
Provides lot's of shade. I think I may shorten it to fit on the new trailer.

I have one of those 4x4 awnings attached to either side of my 'drop. They are a bit of a pain to set up with just one person though. Maybe something like the retractable ones often on caravans scaled down?Image

Kelty makes a sunshade, with three legs, maybe pop one leg up on the camper, add a hook point to hook into inplace of a stake
https://www.amazon.com/Kelty-Sunshade-U ... 01JBX5HEA/

they also do a "big shady"
https://www.amazon.com/Kelty-Big-Shady- ... B07MWRBCBF

but it looks like its larger than the camper :-)

I've always liked the idea of an awning on my TD, but the roofline is too low to really support much of one for an independent one (like a normal camper). On the back I just use my 10x10 eazy up an call it good.
My build, 5x8 modified benroy "Smiles to go". Started April 2nd 2015, first trip August 2nd 2015.

Here is a picture of a canopy I use at the side of my trailer. So simple that I was able to sew it. It uses two fiberglass sectional tent poles crossed under the canopy and aluminum poles to hold it up. It uses an awning rail mounted to the side of the teardrop. Since mine is a woody, I used a wood awing rail.

I do like the one pole, regular tarp idea too.

Wow, THANK YOU all for the great ideas! I knew this was the place to ask! I will likely end up using a combination of these to make an awning that works for me. I will post the end result here,
If anyone else has input, feel free to add it!

So I have a dog, occasionally he must be on a tether, so no awning, or side tables can have legs to the ground. I epoxied a rv channel to the roof, bent to fit. Use heavy duty magnets to the trailer frame for a test. These show pvc frame, moved on to foldable steel channel from old ez up.
Works great

Personally, I'm liking this one quite a bit. Simple, few parts, and easy to set up. I just might have to steal it for my build.
GPW.....are you using something like this?

I use this over the hatch, but it could work on the side as well.

No permanent mounting required and sets up like a tent.
