Anticipating, rather than preventing, water getting in hatch

Postby Cliffmeister2000 » Mon Oct 22, 2007 5:36 pm

I searched, and didn't find this being discussed, but that doesn't mean anything. Searching isn't my strong suit.

I have noticed many "sun roofs" and Moon Roofs" on cars actually have channels built into them, with tubes that run to the underside of the car. Rather than trying to make these openings water tight, they "channel" the water to the ground, where it can do no harm.

I am interested in a similar concept for my Weekender design. This is brought on by the fact that I purchased my hurricane hinge, then modified my design and find that the hinge is 2 inches too short to go to the edges. I am now thinking about making the hatch a total of 8 inches narrower than the weekender, and building channels to run the water to the ground. I am very interested in whether this has been attempted, and with what success?

As you said if you channel the water it shouldnt give you any issues. They been doing it in cars for years.

Look at the trunk or hatch of any modern car, they all let the water in but channel down each side to let it run out.

Exactly! This makes total sense to me.

My question remains, has anybody tried it? What works, and what doesn't?

Why bother I used 3 "T" hinges for my hatch. I then covered the joint with 2 runs of 8" ice dam tape. I then put on my roof over the tape.
After the roof was installed I ran rubbermaid rubber shelf liner over the hinge joint again and capped each edge with 1/4 x 1" aluminum flat stock and trimmed of the excess. I let the ends fly about 2" long and tacked the front edge only to the sides to create a diverter.

I guess the only answer to "Why?" is "Because". Because I want to. Because I think it would be a nice touch. And because it would be (it seems) unique.

Sorry I thought you were looking for an alternative since the hinge was too short.

I didn't know you were a man on a mission.

Well, I'm never one to run from a challenge! And it may end up not being worth the effort, but I am playing with a design. I'll post it when it gets near term. I will, however, keep your post close by, as it seems like an excellent "Plan B".

I think Rob48 's galley hatch doesn't extend clear across the rear. If you look in the Galley Gallery many of the units have an inset hatch and if you look in their albums I am sure there is an answer. I do agree they look cool !
