Question on Molding

Anything to do with mechanical, construction etc

...trim one side of the "L" down to 1/4" first and then anneal and bend...a rubber mallet, a hardwood dolly and an extra pair of hands can do wonders in this situation!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: bending L shaped aluminum

[quote="GageSounds like a lot of extra work to me. Is it really time & cost effective?[/quote]

A friend of my brother's saw my garage (see album) and asked "do the tools pay for themselves". My reply: "no, but neither does a Winnebago".

Building your own is not always about being cost effective. It's about doing exactly what you want and achieving the results you seek.

I got the harbor freight stretcher and shrinker.......Wow.....couple of practice tries and I was able to get my side profile radius right on the money. couple more tries and I was able to make about a 6 inch diameter circle pretty evenly radiused. I'm not overly excited about the grab marks on the aluminum where the shrinking process occurs, but a quick hand sand with a foam sanding block and it was way better.....not great, but better. After seeing Lens molding and how it looks after the insert is installed....Pretty tough to argue with the professional looking results that nets. I have always preferred building it myself if possible, makes me feel good. This will be a tough decision.

Thanks again for all the inputs. I went from not having a clue, to having a number of options to choose from. I've said if before.......I'll say it again.....

John, I think you have it. Explore new horizons, push the envelope, and do exaclty what you want.

I think with a flat sanding block with a thin felt or rubber cushion, you can take all of the "grab" marks out of the flange of the bent aluminum. I really like the result with no buckling.

Gus

I had problems bending annealed home depot aluminum moulding also. The first problem was the grade. It's very hard as far as aluminum goes because it's a cheap, brittle alloy. My second problem - I was attempting to bend the 3/4" moulding. It's way too wide to bend without kinking.I was able to find 1/2" aircraft grade moulding that is butter soft and very reasonably priced. URL below. Also, this company carries 5052 aluminum sheeting in any length, cut to order. And they are a great "mom and pop" company that will go above and beyond to help thier customers. Also, they carry a moulding called "bulb angle" that makes an excellent drip edge.

Mark

I got a great deal on roof edge molding this week from a RV salvage yard. I bought 20 feet ot it , (10 feet each side) for $8.00 a stick and he cut it down from 14 feet and he has 4 more out in the yard. I made 6 calls before i found him but i saved 30+ bucks
