Spare Tire Mount

Postby trailtrekerNJ » Sat Oct 17, 2009 3:15 pm

Helllo all,

Currently up front with Lil Guy 5-wide is the storage shelf, in front of that a tongue mounted storage box and then the spare tire carrier.
What I would like to do is remove the spare tire carrier so that I can mount a battery box/battery to wire up some 12v equipment (for those camgrounds with no electric).
I was thinking on the side of the teardrop, behind the door, above the tire fender.
Does any one know of types/sizes of mounts and where to purchase. I don't want to get sloppy and detract from the teardrops looks or re-sale potential.

Thanks,

mine is home built and I mounted the spare underneath... I don't like the idea of a side mount... lots of road debris.

I mounted it underneath also.

I used a spare tire hook mount from a junkyard car. I installed an eyelet under the trailer.

Hello Al,

My LG is a 6-wide but a similar arrangement with the spare tire. Just a thought. Could you leave the tire as is and put the battery on the platform or inside the large box there? I put a battery box in the keystone shaped box shown in this photo. Wires go out the back of the box under the trailer and up into the tail light area. There is also a converter inside the box that can charge the battery and a charge wire from the tow vehicle 7-pin connector. I converted the original trailer flat-4 to a round-7-pin connector to be able to recharge the trailer battery while towing.

The current location would be most convenient for changing a tire at night on the side of the road. Still not something I would want to do, but at least the spare tire is easy to reach.

One reason for leaving the tire mounted up top on the side is mostly for convienence sake as Bill said. My intention is to keep it mounted on the right side this way when you pull over you are out of the way of traffic.
Concern for mounting under tear drop is that some roads I travel on are quite rocky and I don't want to diminish the ground clearance while bouncing up a mountain trail.
I was planning on getting roof rack rails and cargo basket, so another thought is to mount it inside the basket like some 4-wheelers do with their trucks.

How do you folks paste pictures into the message body?

Wouldn't there be MORE debris underneath?

Debris between the tire and exterior wall causes more damage where it matters.
