Adding a scooter rack

I've bought a 250cc scooter which weighs about 500 lbs. I'm 'pondering' adding a rack on the back of teardrop to carry the scooter. I have 2 X 3 box tubing under the galley door. Any one else done something like this? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

While I don't know much about Teardrops yet, I do know about balancing trailers, and I think your best bet is to build a rack of some sort on the tongue so the weight is suspended between the axle and the tow vehicle.

Five hundred pounds cantilevered out behind you won't tow well, and might give you negative tongue weight.

Good luck, though. Scooters are great additions to camping in general (so much so, I'm building my tear to pull behind my MC).

If I were doing it, I'd build it with just a piece of four inch channel with a hinge on the end across the tongue, another short piece on the hinge for a ramp, and a couple ears on the front and back ends for the strap. If you were clever you could put it right behind the propane tank.

Well, I wouldn't add it to the tongue but don't forget your going to have to add counter weight to the tongue if you do try and add the scooter to the back. In other words, adding 500+ lbs to the back of your teardrop is not a good idea. You need to think this out some more.

If you know exactly how much the scooter weighs it will help your advice. Very few scooters weight 500 pounds...

We put my scooter and the hubby's Honda Shadow in the box of our truck.............not much help if you don't have a truck......but it works for us.

It sounds like you may have to get a rack made just for scooters, bikes, mopeds, that slides into your hitch. Then get a dual hitch extender (harbor freight) to hook both up to. I just hope you have a vehicle that can handle this. I would also be curious if the scooter is small enough to fit inside the camper.

Thanks everyone for the advice. But the paperwork didn't come thru so I won't be getting the scooter after all.
