What type of sealant to use for aluminum roof edging?

Anything to do with mechanical, construction etc

Terry,

I ran a few strips of blue painter tape underneath the trim extending beyond where the trim would go. I pre-fit all the trim, including drilling holes for the screws and fastening the screws. Then I took a utility knife and scored along the edge of the trim. I removed the screws and trim, and peeled up the portion of the blue tape that was under the trim. I injected sealant into the holes (had to cut part of the tip off the syringe to get it to flow) and applied sealant to the trim, and fastened the trim in place.

Once the sealant cured, I ran the utility knife back along the edge of the trim. I then pulled up the blue tape and this removed the bead of sealant squeeze out. A little of the sealant adhered to the trim. I cleaned up the leftover sealant with a scotchbright pad - the type that doesn't scratch - and a little denatured alcohol. I left the squeeze out around the screw heads because they will be covered with vinyl trim.

Take care,
Tom

I wonder what would be a good brand of polyurathane caulk to use that you can get at lowes or home depot.

Larry,

The Sikaflex 221 mentioned earlier is a Polyurethane sealant like you are looking for. This is what I would recommend using. Clean up is soooo much easier as earlier stated than silicones. Let it squirt out and set up. Then the next day trim with a utility knife and peel off the bead. Don't try to wipe it off wet, it will make a grand mess. Clean up any excess with a paper towel and some lacquer thinner and you are good to go.

Any idea how much sealant it takes to trim a standard teardrop? (# of tubes or oz)

Thanks,

John

John,

That would depend on length of molding
I have a little over 30 ft to do and figure 2 of the 10 oz caulking sized tubes will do it.
