Thanks Bonnie.
Seeing you wade through your woes with the challenge of your hobbit door, and knowing it wouldn't be until my next (first total) build before I got to incorporate the hobbit door design. (The Elf Mansion). (I really think I am going to go with the full octagonal door, use your garage door "latch-bolt" design, but maybe paint it in a round circle on the outer surface.) So I stepped up to the mound... burned the midnight oil, and went with the best ideas.
So now my Elf Cottage has some garden, around the big rocks at the sides... :-) What do you think of the "grass"? I was going to paint it just normal "paint it green" and started to go horizontal strokes. I had already done an under-primer coating with water based poly, so it's sealed. And, I noticed that the black was REALLY showing my brush strokes through, and I put on some sideways/vertical strokes just to get the paint on and try to fill in the color. I guess the "GRASS" mode was on my mind because I decide, "hey, that LOOKS like grass, that way, vertical strokes." So I did the entire circumference with the vertical see through strokes, so up close it all looks like grass growing, individual blades of grass.
:-D
