Two 7-1/4" blades on the arbor, with a shim in between. I made a zero clearance insert from 1/4" ply..raised the running blades through it.
I cut two strips each pass.

Steve--are those dado blades or circular saw blades?
Still graced with two eyes and ten fingers (due in no small part to luck!).

Just when you think a problem is solved, an uglier result replaces it.

Just regular circ-saw blades. I did use the center of my three wing molding head as a shim once, Image
two or three flat washers another.
 You know, a dado set without the chippers would work also!
Didn't think of that, since my dado setup is a "wobbler".

Steve, thanks. My thinking was that my dado blades are sharp, my tablesaw blades aren't!

I guess with the dado blades without the chipper, there might be just a little more waste than with a thin-kerf blade. But your 2 blade setup would have made my project 2 weeks ago faster when I ripped a bunch of 1/4 inch strips for my galley countertop.

Boy...I need some closure on this thread...but I have a couple other things that I want to show that may be usefull...

First off...about ripping cedar boards. Cedar comes in an amazing variety of colors and an individual board may change colors thoughout its length. The range of colors can go from a very light cream colored to a dark tan, to a deep red. One of the things that the homebuilder can do is index your strips as they come off the board (BTW...many of the best kayak shops that supply kits now number their boards as they are ripped to keep them in order.) I tend to lay them out in order that I rip them and then bundle them so I have a sense on what I have when I set up for stripping!!!

Image

Some stripping designs are random, but I have always thought that the best were in some sort of pattern. On side two, I tiried to do something similar to side one. I ran a bunch of the darker strips along the line of the window...and used a 1/2 cut lighter strip to transition. It's a little hard to see on the raw wood...but once a finish is applied the contrast will be substantial!! Phew...here's a pic of side two stripped!!!

Image

Next...I'm going to lay that side back down...use Roly's beltsander tutorial, fill the cracks, block and finish...we'll see how it goes!!!

Thanks guys...Boy, was I happy to get that last side stripped. It really took me forever and I'm a little burned out on TD sides for the time being. Happily, I'm in for a welcome break from work and teardrop trailers!!! On Sunday, I'm flying out on a float plane to a FS cabin for a week of hunting and cutthroat trout fishing with a couple of friends. Yippee!!!!

That looks amazing. I am sure that was a ton of work but definately worth the time. Wonder if I can talk Mamma into letting make another 8)

Yuk...I'm back on the road again...before I left, I dry fit the bulkheads and marked some stuff. Next weekend, if I get home, I'll drop the sides one last time, do some welding I need to do to finish up... then fill, sand, epoxy that last side and put up the sides for good. That will make me happy!!!! Everything is cut for the skins, hatch, spars etc. Its just a matter of finding time.

:) :) :)
