Way cool. Can you tell me about the hatch supports or where I can get detailed information? I might have to change my plan.![]()
I think you will at least be campable by July.
Miriam, I got the hatch supports through Austin Hardware. I like the low-tech nature of these props vs. the gas lifts. I did have to do some modification to these though. Shortened them up and removed one of the brackets. Easy stuff. They have more sizes and configurations now, but at the time I got mine, they only had one length and one type of bracket, so I had to make do. I ended up cutting mine down to about 18.5" Let me know if you want more info, or better pics.

Hey Dean,
I'd like to see some more of those pictures on your hatch support. We're ready to put the same supports on our tear. Saw them first here on your thread and they looked like what we wanted. Ordered and received them within three days.
How did you figure out the right place to put them and how long the supports should be?? Is there some kind of formula for supporting the weight in the right place? We already took the one bracket off on each support.
Thanks so much!
Qthis photo helped a lot.
I'll try to take some pics and post those later. As far as the length/positioning, etc goes, I didn't use anything that could even remotely be considered a "formula" :-)
Basically, I just estimated a position that would (a) open the hatch wide enough so I didn't bump my head, and (b) cleared all the obstacles in the galley when the hatch was closed. Here's a good description of the process I used taken from another thread:
"I marked, with tape, where I wanted the props to mount when opened and compaired the given sizes. I then closed the hatch to see if I was at the closed length or longer, longer is not bad. If not I moved my marks until the two worked. I wanted the mounting points out as far as possible."
Obviously this is a lot easier if you haven't skinned your hatch yet (sadly, I didn't follow my own advice).
The mechanical hatch support are much more forgiving than then gas ones. They will hold up your hatch with ease no matter where they are positioned.
The only other thing specific to my installation is that I attached the hatch support to the galley wall using a threaded insert installed from the outside. If you need more info, feel free to PM me. I'll try to get some pics up as well.
