Woodie roof builders questions

Coldbeer...I build "tin roof" woodies...but for the screws you mention on your roof....I'd use epoxy under the skin on the stringers and screw it down...after the glue cures...back out the screws and drill it out with a forstner bit and install a bung plug in the hole...I've done a couple of wooden boats using that technique...sand the plug flush...for a sealant under the aluminum molding...3M has a product called 5200 sealant...made for below water line sealing on boats...works really well, but not cheap...Doug

Are you using stringer across the roof? If you are having to piece the roof it would be easier. Other wise, you need to join the pieces before putting the roof up and use one of the joinery methods.

I haven't decided what kind of glue yet so I will leave that to those who know.

Titebond III is a great glue and it is water proof too. I sealed the end of my ply with glue first then spar varnish.

I used 3m's 5200. It's white goop than comes in a tube, it can be a litle messy to work with, but it's a sealant that never dries 100%, so it never cracks.

I used 1/4" oak plywood for my roof. I used NO nails, screws, or staples to attach it, therefor it had no holes to fill. I used thickened epoxy as an adhesive and seam filler for the edges. The joints are stronger than the plywood itself. In other words the plywood would break apart before the epoxy joints would break. I also didn't leave the side wall and top edge plain, I laminated strips of oak together to trim the edges. Sorry I didn't answer any of the Q's, well maybe #1 sort of...

Rick....do you have it on tape? How are you getting Red Green? I haven't seen it run on any channels in years...PS didja ever see him give tips on how to load a boat on a trailer? Have fun on your build...I think most everyone will admit that when it is all over and done, it was worth it...Doug
