Weather All -Roof Sealant

Call for Advise and Experience from all TD Builders and Dreamers...

As I start my TD build a local homebuilder stopped by and asked what I was going to do to weather proof my TD roof. He sugested roll "WeatherALL" I used this on a shingle roof repair and underlayment. It has a self adheasive back comes in 3 ' width on rolls. It is an improvemetn on the old felt paper underlayment that has been placed under shingles for year. This new product is flexible, selfsealing around nails from the shingles, etc.

I never thought of this for TD application. I suppose a top coat could go on the outside to give a finish in white.

...I dunno Dee, I think the key statement is "used UNDER shingles" as opposed to being the actual roof covering. I can tell you from real world experience that the various membrane type roof coverings, even the best of them, work only so-so and require lots of maintenance...is such cases "self sealing" is more a myth than not.
If you do not want to use aluminum, I suggest wood and 'glass with a spar varnish coating...my 2cents worth

That looks like some interesting stuff. I'd be real interested to hear what you find out or other's opinions too. I'm still pondering what to cover my trailer with. The sides will be around 62" high x 125" long and it's 61" wide so I'm watching all the posts about exterior coverings.

So far I'm considering Flexroof. It's Filon FRP that they use for roofs of motorhomes. I'm sure it's the same stuff that's been discussed here many times. It costs $1.29/sq ft at a place within driving distance, which is somewhat affordable to me but I'm definitely open to the options you guys keep coming up with.

I'm a 90% kind of guy... used to be a 99% guy, then I got old(er)/

If I valued looks, I'd go with some kind of non-paint covering. But for ease of build, I went with something I can brush on.

But, I did that because some of the new liquids, like resin, are now so durable, it just made sense.... but, then, I'm not going to try and win awards, I just want to protect it from the elements.

Dee Bee, Look into Kool Seal elastomeric coating, which is used on bus conversions. It is flexible and has ceramics in it , Very high tech. In addition, it has a higher reflectivity than aluminum.

The web site has pricing for this and other products. $17 a gallon. Any answers on application over plywood?

DeeBee and Dean,, I used a commercial roofing roll material called TPO,, it works pretty good but bubbles and or wrinkles are a bear to keep from forming,, its definately waterproof but the jury is still out on wheather I really like it or not,, metal sure would have been an easire solution,, I used it because of cost,, Free,,, I sell commercial roofing,
there are advantages though,, seamless front to back, as long as its not over 10' wide,, if ya had to buy it it would run about 40 cents a sq ft.
three colors,, white, pale grey or light tan. Beverly also used a pvc on her trailer, TPO is a hybrid pvc,
its a good material but is not easy to work completely flat,,

According to their support people it will cover existing paint or bare wood.

I recevied this reply from Kool Seal:

Unfortunately, Kool Seal products are not recommended to go over any type of wood. They should not be used as the main water proofing membrane. A substrate would need to be installed.

ANOTHER:

I received a phone call from Ames. Their product can be put on wood. The recommend applying it like fiberglass resin. Wet the surface with a coat, apply polyester cloth, then another coat on top. 5 gallons, about $150 including shipping, $50.00 for 500 sq. ft of cloth. This is the best of my recollection.... but he did say it should work well on tear drops.

Anyone interested should contact them to verify everything and get more ideas...
