Door knob/latch

Postby Lawnjockey » Sun Dec 20, 2009 6:28 pm

What should I be looking for in a door knob/latch and where should I get it?

Thanks

Jocko
On my last build I wanted to use something different than the sometimes "obligatory Model A latch", so I built up the door and jamb to accept a regular house lockset

I like our latches because of the dead bolt and the fact that they lie almost flush with the door. Nothing sticks out. The only bad thing is you need doors at least 1 1/4" thick.

I used the L handle shown below:

with the lockset that has an interior thumb latch:

I don't have a good shot of them on up close. They worked out great for a 1" thick wall. Just a small shim plate on the inside behind the lock gave me the perfect "ker-thunk" close.

I think you can get them from any Red Neck Trailer location. I ordered mine from http://www.tjtrailers.com/store/door-accessories.html. If you use something like this, remember to get one right-hand lockset and one left hand. The handles are all the same.

As Dan did I also went with the standard house door knob and have had no troubles with it. I'm planning on the same with my present build

My door is 3/4'" thick so a regular door knob won't work. I also have a 3/4" door stop so I figure I will have to put a 3/4" block on the door where the handle goes thus the door is effectively 1 1/2 inches thick where the latch is mounted. Is that a thickness that the lever type latches sold by the TD parts suppliers will work on?

The lever types can be used on any thickness, since the shaft is left extra long and you cut it to your length after installing

Thanks, is there any brand or type to look for or stay away from?

Like Dan I went with a regular door set, just picked a different looking style knob. Easy to find two with the same code.

Used a cool tool to cut everything just right!

Jocko, if you have a Lowes nearby, take a look there. I saw a security screen and storm door latch and dead bolt lock set there that looked good and would work on a 3/4" to 1-1/4" thick door. It was nice looking; but, if I remember correctly, the set was $44.

Like Sharon pointed out, I'll be using a mortise-type storm door lockset.

I bought mine online but they are available at the blue box.
