question about alt place for galley

Ive been planning my TD for the last year. Finally it's build time, but I'm stuck on what i want to design. The basic plan is the harbor freight design, with the "woody" finish. but I have deviated from the plan to make a table fold down from the rear passanger side. The wood panel seem will hide the the fact that it folds down. But this got me thinking over the last week. What if i made the full driver side fold down into a giant table(basically the size of the teardrop shape, ie 4x8). and in that the galley was built on it. (ie it would sit in the TD during transport, and look like a normal TD, but when set up the wall would fold down with galley.)

This would allow me to have all the space inside to make a sleeping quarters, with a little bench and fold down table at the head.

anyone done anything like this? any advice?

I can kind of picture you're design in my head, but the more I think about it I keep picturing this...








All kidding aside, if you could sketch up your idea (even on paper and scan it in) it may help. I'm a very visual person. I think I know what your talking about but a visual would definitely help!

The biggest issues with any build are keeping it dry and and together as it goes down the road.

first of all I doubt they'd allow you to take something on the road that could potentially flop down into the lane beside you. I think if you really wanted to do something along that line of thinking, I be looking to make a slide out arrangement over a flip out.. there are pieces of hardware that would allow you to lift the outside panel off once the slider was withdrawn.

Part of the reason why a teardrop is so sturdy are the two walls-roof configuration. If you take a wall away, you lose almost all stability.

I am just going to flat-out say it... Folding down a whole wall on a trailer, or a significant portion is just a bad idea.

afreegreek suggested a sliding portion -- I'm much more of an advocate of this type of design. You need to keep in mind weight and balance though. You probably don't want the whole wall to slide out either, for the same reason that a fold-out is a bad idea.

Another issue would be keeping the fold down portion dry when you camped in bad weather. If you folded it back up to protect it, you'd find yourself sleeping in the tow vehicle.
