Battery placement

Help- I am wondering about the safety of having both the battery and gas stove in the galley. I wasn't planning on putting the battery in the tongue box but think I might have to...but I don't want to re-plan the wiring. I'm open to any suggestions and ideas of where a safe place to but the battery would be. Thanks!

My original plan was for the battery in the galley area, but after more research I opted for the tongue box. I ran a single line from the battery to the original planned location where all the wiring was in the galley.

I used a vacuum cleaner cord for the run, two wires contained in a nice rubber coated cover.

You could wait until the end of the build and then decide if you need more weight on the tongue or in the back. A battery is quite heavy and will sometimes make the difference you need. Running two wires from the front to the back under the trailer is no problem. If you planned for the battery in the back and then put it in front you would not have a problem finding things to store in that cabinet. Its not hard to make a cabinet sealed and properly vented so there should be no worry about where it is located.

While this idea may too late in your situation but it is an idea I am trying toss around.

How about mounting the battery, charger, inverter in a "dropped" box under the sleeping area.
I have seen the sleeping areas being built with a storage box and what a better place than to store your shore power cord, battery, charger, and inverter. Get to camp, reach in and set your power for shore or battery, and your done until you leave.

The first concern is the height of the battery and if it will fit the box....

You could build a battery box in the floor of your teardrop or use a pre made one like this one from Summit Racing.

I've installed 2 of these in the three teardrops I've built.


They are great if you have the road clearance.
If you do it this way make sure you make a trap door to access them. Danny

Have you purchased your battery? See about getting an AGM type battery.

They're completely sealed and there're no HazMat restrictions on them, either. They're non-spillable and would only outgas if overcharged (which is why you want a good microprocessor-controlled charger). This is one battery that will be in my galley area, although within it's own ventilated space.

Since my tear will ride slightly lower than most, I intend to "drop" the battery partway through the galley floor... not low enough to limit the planned 8 inch ground clearance, but as low as practical to improve the trailer's center of gravity. It will be just aft of the axle and in the center of the trailer. The battery is 71 lbs. It's huge.

I also used a bolt in battery tray,. but I ordered it from Speedwaymotors.
I think it was about $35. Mounted it onto the torflex axle.

Now that you reminded me that's were I get mine.
I get catalogs from Summit & Speedway every month and get them mixed up.

I am planning for this set up as well right behind the axle. Any thoughts on the minimum raod clearance might be if it is right at the axle ?

You need to have enough clearance with a totally blown tire and all the weight on that side of the suspension to avoid road contact.
Road debris is another concern to address. Danny

I mounted it so that it has the same ground clearance
as the wheels.
