To drip edge, or not -- for little guy doors

Postby MKE_Tear » Fri Jun 10, 2011 10:21 pm

Drip edge, drip cap, drip rail, drip channel or whatever you may call it, what would be the pro's & con's for installing above Little Guy doors?

I suppose they are not needed, but would anyone recommend them?

Thanks in advance!!

I'll have them over mine to act like a break, so water running down the side will not ''cling'' to the top of the frame and drip inside the the frame when door is open in the rain. I'm going with a benroy profile, so my roof is somewhat flat though, so I expect more side runnoff then other profiles.

I have drip caps over my windows...which are sliders...with the drip cap, I can open them when it rains, much like a jalousie/crankout type windows...very handy option IMO...............

Thanks madjack & dh!

As you can see in my attached photo, I have a drip cap over my front window. I added it because there really was no seal behind the window itself (not sure if it came from a truck or wherever -- got it on eBay). While I used a polyurethane construction adhesive to help hold/secure the window, then screwed it down, and lastly siliconed the edge, I just wanted to be sure as sure as possible with run-off coming down the front of the trailer (with such a large surface area & angled downward). I felt it best to add the drip cap to the front. In my case, the drip cap has nothing to do with being able to keep the window open in the rain, since it is angled like that. I can see where it would be good for you, madjack.

I am now second-guessing my idea of doing that exact same thing over the doors just bec. I can see my wife or I banging our heads as we get in and out. The drip cap sticks out about 1 3/4 inches.

I wish I could say I have field experience in the camper, maybe that would give me my answer. But I don't, I still have to finish the hatch. Hence my request for advice.

EDIT: Hey, madcap, I see you changed the photo in your reply, while I was replying to you. Thanks for showing me how your camper is set up. I guess you won't be banging your heads on that since the window is inside your door.

Nice beer! 8)

Just a thought, for the price of an empty cerial box and a few bits of masking tape, you could mock up a drip cap or two and try them out.

Every part of my build gets mocked up in cardboard and tape, tested, tweeked, and eventually built.

Really great idea, thanks!!

The drip caps for above the doors are back on the table. I ordered them last night. Would be great if I could get them by the weekend but I'm not holding my breath.

Thanks again!

Where did you order your drip edges from? I've been thinking about adding those too.

Also, on a similar subject... consider adding or replacing the weatherstripping on the doors. Maybe its just me, but I've been having a little issue with some water coming in the bottom of the doors while driving in heavy rain. I plan on replacing my weatherstripping this weekend.

Got mine from www.shoprvparts.com . They were the best price I could find, including eBay. Got the one for the front window from them last year.

As for the weatherstripping, did you see that pipe wrap/insulation (shown in my thread) that I used on the bottom? I wonder if that would fix your problem.

Cool thanks. Just now saw what you did for your doors. Might have to try that!
