My New Benroy Project

Postby dlcunningham » Sun Feb 24, 2013 12:48 am

My Benroy project is officially underway. I ordered a 5’x8’ trailer from Northern Tool and assembled it last Monday (2/18/13) and I am very pleased with the quality of the trailer, and it’s already painted black. The instructions said 4 hours and I’m at double that and still need to set the wiring harness. I have to assemble trailer and put a floor on it to get it titled in Colorado. I picked this trailer since I needed a bolt together trailer and I live in a rural area and they delivered it to my door for no additional charge.

I have spent countless hours on this forum sorting through very good and differing thoughts and ideas, and had decided to make a sandwich type wall so I can insulate the interior walls, using ¼” exterior ply, with ¾” spacer with another 1/4 “ or 1/8” interior wall. The most economical source of material for me is an orange Big-Box store that is 2 hours away. Well – I got to the ¼” ply section, pulled it off the rack and saw how thin and flimsy it was and just couldn’t bring myself to bring it home. I just think that even after fiberglass and 1” by (3/4” actual) material to stiffen it, it was just too thin. I could just imagine being sound asleep in the mountains and a bear or mountain lion smelling an easy meal on the other side of the ¼” ply so I came home with ½” Birch plywood for my exterior wall construction. It is better quality and just feels more solid. I will not cover the sidewalls with fiberglass and probably go with a “woody” look. Before, I was going to fiberglass the skin and paint it with a marine quality paint.

Stay tuned - I just need to stay on my ADD meds and maybe I'll stick to the plan.

My first trailer was a Woody Benroy. Worked out great, and I am sure yours will too. It sounds like you have a plan and this is a good place to get help if you need it. Have fun making sawdust!

I constructed mine using the same sandwich method you discribed using 1/4" ply for the outside of mine, but then covered it with aluminum. Once the 1/4" is glued / screwed to the framing lumber (1 x) it stiffens up a lot. Just used luan on the inside.

Good luck and don't forget,..... :pictures:
