What are you using for door hinges? Sources?

Postby Martinjmpr » Thu Mar 28, 2013 2:03 pm

One thing I want to get rid of is the cheap looking piano hinge on the side door:

Image

So what kind of hinges are people using? I've seen the plastic hinge, but I'm leery of its durability.

Is anybody running a marine-type hinge? Any pics or sources?

Thanks in advance! :D

Lift off stainless steel. Screws go into the jambs and are inaccessible when the doors are locked closed.

The seal does need to be on the inner surface of the door to use them.

I'm using some old bronze marine hinges from a local consignement shop. I love the way they look but I had to build landing pads as you can see

Martin,

Plastic garden gate hinges from our local hardware.

Sprung loaded with adjustment.

No problems so far and they have had some use.

I don't have a close up picture but you can still see what they look like. Made of Stainless steel and from a Marine parts supplier. Surprisingly cheap, and good quality.

Martin,

Piano hinges don't look so cheap if they are installed like a regular hinge, so you only see the backbone of the hinge.

Like this;

I use preformed aluminum piano hinges from Grant Whipp.
They look and work quite well.
Hardly noticeable on the outside when installed.

I used this plated brass hinge at McMaster-Carr. Its the type "4" on this page.
http://www.mcmaster.com/#lift-off-hinges/=m4fuui
They have gone up in cost over the past few years, About 6$ when I purchased !

I am a real fan of liftoff hinges for just about everything,
In fact as a Kid I did not realise there was anything but that as all houses are built with lift-offs.
Then arrived in America, Some things here are "different".

Hi Martin, We used these refrigerator door hinges. Here's a link: http://www.etrailer.com/Enclosed-Trailer-Parts/Redline/383700.html

Image
They are flush fit so we need to offset them.

Image
Here's a picture of the offset aluminum.

Cheers,

Dave

Stanley gate hinges (or the HD generic copy), powder coat black, with plastic bearing surfaces. About $6 each. I used three per door so they'll never sag.97338

For a clean look, you could go with a SOSS hinge, which is invisible from inside and outside, being set within a mortise in the door and frame. Expensive, though.

I use these as well. I only used 2/door but I don't think it will be an issue.
