help needed removing weatherstripping adhesive

Postby BillZ » Sat May 31, 2014 8:12 am

I need to replace the door weatherstripping and am having a heck of a time getting the old adhesive off. I started to use Goo Gone but saw that it removes varnish. The doors are varnished (Spar Urethane)wood and indeed the Goo Gone was softening the finish so I stopped immediately.
I haven't been able to find an adhesive remover that won't damage the varnish. It also looks like some silicone may have been used for extra adhesion but I am not certain yet.

Any help is appreciated!

You might want to try " Zippo" lighter fluid.

It works, and I didn't notice any varnish removal.

Thanks for the tip.
I was doing more research and found WD-40 was mentioned to work. Since it can remove paint I am guessing it's probably not good for varnish.
Another article mentioned denatured alcohol would remove silicone without harming varnished surfaces. I'll have to try that also.

Thanks for the reply. I just spent about 6 hours painstakingly scraping with a plastic scraper, softening with a hair dryer, a little goo gone, and denatured alcohol. There was a lot of silicone to remove. Ugh! I am beat but I got it off and the new on. Hopefully the doors won't leak now for several seasons.
