Linksys router

Postby Dooner » Tue Apr 03, 2007 11:45 pm

Just a heads up for anyone in the market for a wireless router. I do not recommend the Linksys brand. I bought one and seemed to work OK at the beginning, but soon started loosing the internet connection. I would have to unplug it and let it reboot to find the connection. It did this once a week, then every day, and began doing it three or four times a day. Emailed and called Linksys, did everything they said to do and still did it.
I took mine back to Walmart and bought a Belkin. So far so good. Only time will tell.
I wasn't the only one that had this trouble. The service clerk said that a few more came back.

Doomer, sounds like you got a bad one, I help people almost everday put their routers into action with their DSL connection. Linksys is just as good a brand as anyother. You just go a lemon.

If it happens again, you should check your electrial wiring where the router is plugged in, they are very sensitive to incorrect wiring

I bought a Dlink router when I bought my wireless card for my laptop. Haven't had any trouble with it. I was looking at the Linksys but there were a lot of complaints on Newegg about them at the time.

I had a D-Link wired router at first, it burned up because it was in between the computer and modem, the same thing happened to a buddy. I got another one and placed the router and modem vertically, never had a problem again.

I got a wireless G Linksys router when I got my laptop. It's been working for a year with no problems. If you get the right kind, it has Linux firmware for which hacks are available. Hacks to configure the router, not hacks to bypass it.

I think maybe you got a bad one. I have had my Linksys up and running for 4 years now without problems. Are you sure that your receiving end (wireless NIC) was truely compatible??

4 years with my Linksys wireless! I had a glitch with my wife's HP laptop and the connection! The solution was as Dooner did. It seems to be just Phyll's L/T. We have two other wireless L/T's, no prob with them!

My first Linksys Wireless G Router lasted one month and they replaced it. That one lasted about 2 years. I bought a new one a few months ago and everything seems fine for now. As far as I know their track record isn't impressive to me but this is the only brand I've bought. Danny

I'm glad you guys are having good service out of your older Linksys routers. :applause:
I gave mine a chance and contacted tech service by email and phone for almost three weeks. I reinstalled, updated, reset, and configured as they recommended. Nothing would work. So the best solution I saw, was to take it back and get a refund, then buy a different brand. I went with a Belkin wireless router  (recommended by the cute Walmart worker) and it is working great. Seems to be faster connecting to my laptop and the speed of the internet seems to be alot faster. I am real happy so far. :D
As far as compatability with my equipment, the tech people all said it was. And the outlet that it was plugged in is a year old (new addition) and right above the breaker panel. So it is a direct shot to the breaker.
