New credit card scam

Postby Arne » Wed Oct 08, 2008 4:33 pm

Several years ago, I was billed for 19.95 on my credit card. I did not recognize the name and did a google on it. Turns out it was a scam where they got my card no. Lots of people were hit by the same thing.

Today, I was doing my m/c bill and had a charge for $9.85 from musicissimple.com....

They try to sneak these things through by using small amounts, thinking that we will not remember something like that and just pay it..

I googled it and found the following. I called citi card and they have removed the charge.. they did not say they would challenge it, they said they would 'permanently remove it'. meaning, they know about it.

always save your receipts and balance your c/c bills....

Thanks for the heads up!

While reading some of the comments on the link you gave, I ran across this one:

Same charge of $9.85, I think they got my cc # from helix studios, which is a porn site i frequent. It makes me mad.

Sorry, but if you frequent "porn sites" you are asking for fraud. JMHO

I was wondering why the water balloon was getting bigger... and then it hit me.

I never use a real CC online. I have a seperate checking account only used for online purchases. I use the debit card from that acct for online purchases. I never keep more than a couple hundred bucks in it so if anybody gets the # They can't hurt me too bad. It's also easier to keep track of since there is not that many charges on it.

I keep a $300 limit credit card just for internet orders. Has worked for years so far so good. (My credit union does not keep increasing the limit on my card)

The small charges are also tests to see if a card is good. If a small charge goes through, the next month it gets hit with a big purchase. I had $900 in plane tickets charged to my card...looking back there had been two sub $5 charges the previous month. The moral of the story, keep a watch on your statements and know what every charge was for.
