Logitech Nano VX. It's a wireless laser mouse that will work on any surface. It's absolutely great. It has the world's smallest USB dongle, and it has power management to save on battery life.

$44.95 at Costco.

Want to Try Ubuntu Linux

Postby Carter » Tue Oct 28, 2008 4:12 am

Members in this thread have asked about trying Ubuntu. The desktop CD offers a couple of options for this without removing Windows from your machine. You can just run it off the CD without any change at all to your computer. Used this way programs open a bit slow because they load from the CD, not your hard drive. It gives you a good idea of how Ubuntu works and some of the open source software available.

You can also install Ubuntu as a program within Windows like you would any other Windows based software. No need to format the C drive, create partitions or the like and it can be uninstalled. This choice will give you a good feel for the operating system with little change to your computer. See http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/iso for instructions on downloading and burning a cd. Check out the other site pages for tons more information on Ubuntu. Note that their page about installing Ubuntu inside Windows is out of date. You do not have to download or use any other program, the Ubuntu Desktop CD takes care of it all.

Mike,

Seems like way back in august you were looking for a recipe progam (linux)

I'm using this one

http://linux.softlookup.com/display.asp?id=143635

It's so ubiquitous on the web you've probably already found it -- but just in case here it is. Called Gourmet. It also turned up- in a my synaptic thingy.

Imports Mealmaster and a half dozen other recipe formats. That way I keep the same recipes 0n alol computers (danged snmall keyboard!!) and can transfer easily from one to the other (linux/pc)

I like it.

I've joined the Linux club.

I downloaded Ubuntu 8.10 Linux and installed it on my new laptop. I can chose Ubuntu or Vista on bootup.

The installation was a breeze and I was shocked at how much great software comes built in.

Welcome to the club! Don't be shocked - there's way, way more software available for free for Linux than you've even seen so far.

If you need to watch Hollywood's DVDs on your computer, there is a way to do that. Go to https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Restr ... layingDVDs to see how.

I watched Raiders of the Lost Ark (yet again) on my Ubuntu machine last night.

Suggestions,
If you have a somewhat modern machine try Kubuntu. A Ubuntu based derivative with an elegant desktop. I have a Dell Optiplex GX620 hooked to a 1920x1080p monitor and the onboard graphics card worked fine with Kubuntu. It's not supported when I loaded XP- go figure.

If you have an older machine try Puppy Linux. I have an old Dell Celeron 600 laptop with a 1.4 gig HD running Puppy. It only takes up 100 megs of the drive and flies on the web with a plug-in wireless card. Works well with Open Office and a couple of graphics programs I have tried. Linux Distro's are good fun at the best price, free
