Members in this thread have asked about trying Ubuntu. The desktop CD offers a couple of options for this without removing Windows from your machine. You can just run it off the CD without any change at all to your computer. Used this way programs open a bit slow because they load from the CD, not your hard drive. It gives you a good idea of how Ubuntu works and some of the open source software available.
You can also install Ubuntu as a program within Windows like you would any other Windows based software. No need to format the C drive, create partitions or the like and it can be uninstalled. This choice will give you a good feel for the operating system with little change to your computer. See

Note that their page about installing Ubuntu inside Windows is out of date. You do not have to download or use any other program, the Ubuntu Desktop CD takes care of it all.
