What to see in Southern Minnesota

Postby robfisher » Wed Sep 19, 2012 9:29 pm

Will be subjecting myself to a few medical tests in Rochester, MN first part of October. Probably nothing but seems prudent to find out if they can make the pain go away.

Anyway, there are at least a couple of days we will be waiting for results and wondered how Cynthia and I should fill the time. Have never seen the Spam Museum and thought this would be a good opportunity. Is there anything else we should see? We're not afraid of driving.

Hi Rob,

Too bad you won't be here a week earlier...we would love to have you stop by the Camp-Inn Camp-Outt!

The SPAM Museum is fun & free! If you're up for some outdoor activity, Whitewater State Park is beautiful & has several trails. It is located about 27 miles east of Rochester. For a leisurely drive, take Hwy 14 east out of Rochester until you get to St. Charles (about 20 miles). Go north on Hwy 74 about 6 miles to the park. About 60 miles east of Rochester on I-90 east is the Mississippi River. Just before you cross the river into LaCrosse, WI, there is a Lock & Dam. They have a nice little visitor's center that tells the history of transportation & shipping on the Mississippi. There is also a viewing platform at the lock, so you can watch the barges lock through.

Another pretty area/drive is Lanesboro/Rushford area. From Lanesboro to Rushford, the road follows the Root River & eventually empties into the Mississippi. Take Hwy 52 south/east out of Rochester about 46 miles to Lanesboro then follow Hwy 16 east to Rushford. Quaint towns & shops along the way. You can head north on Hwy 46 out of Rushford & catch I-90 back to Rochester or continue on Hwy 16 to the Mississippi River & head north to La Crescent, MN (just south of where I-90 crosses into Wisconsin at the Lock & Dam.

If you want, come further east to our factory for a visit & tour. We are located about 140 miles east of Rochester. Take I-90 east from Rochester into Wisconsin to New Lisbon. Go north on Hwy 80 into Necedah. We are located under the water tower, in the industrial park (which is made up of 3 businesses! ). Between LaCrosse & New Lisbon, you will pass through Tomah (43 miles from LaCrosse) & can also see the cranberry marshes just off the interstate, or head north from Tomah about 10 miles to Warrens where there are cranberry marshes everywhere. You will be here right around harvest time, so may see that going on. Warrens also has a nice museum/discovery center on the history of cranberry farming/industry in this area. Wisconsin is the #1 producer of cranberries in the world. At Tomah, you can take exit 43 & turn right on Hwy 131. The road will take you into Amish country. And there are always the cheese factories...some give tours!

Of course, if you want to get a taste of the "City," you can travel north about 90 miles to the Twin Cities - Minneapolis/St. Paul. Lots of interesting museums, shops, etc. there.

So, this gives you a few ideas. There are several members of the forum who live in the Rochester/MN/WI area. I'm sure they will have more to add.

Let me know if you want any further info.

Betsey,

Thank you so much for taking the time to think about this and post. It's people like you who really make life a joy.

It would be a highlight to see where those beautiful trailers begin life. Don't quite know when the tests might take place but just so that I know are you open Saturday the 6th? May also have some time Friday or even Wednesday before they start.

You can drive over to my house and see a teardrop!

Rochester has a unique corn cob water tower.

While you are stuck waiting for your appointments tour many of the Mayo Gonda waiting areas. Mayo has a fantastic art collection.
Walk into the Plummer building, which is a beautiful Art Deco builing. On the third floor is a historical display office. Take the elevators, the most beautiful elevators I have ever seen.

Besides teardrop, what do you enjoy doing during down time?

Barnes and Nobel is located in an old movie theater downtown. Wonderful use of the building. Remember watching movies and enjoying the "sparkling" ceiling.

If you are allowed to eat, I suggest traveling to Raindbow Room in Pine Island, Mn. About 20 miles north of Rochester. I like their food.'

Now if you were a geocacher, I can provide LOTS of recommendations.

Touring the Camp Inn factory is very enjoyable, amazing to see the factory floor and detailed craftsmanship.

Some other unique places to consider:

Mayo Clinic Heritage Days: October 1 - 5, 2012
Numerous events, musical entertainment, vintage automobiles, Mount everest research team, Mayo Clinic and the White House:
Caring for America's First Families documentary film marrated by Tom Brokaw

Bryon, Mn: Oxbow county park, small free zoo
under 30 minute drive west from Rochester

Billy Clocks Museum in Spillville, Iowa.
Truely a unique collection. About 90 Minutes south of Rochester.

Pope and Young Club Museum in Chatfield, Mn
30 minutes SE of Rochester on Hwy 52
http://www.pope-young.org/museum_main.asp
I toured the museum a few years ago, amazing to me the collection of bow and arrows.

Bird watching:
Visit the Upper Mississippi & Trempealeau River Refuges Wetland Gem. The Brownsville Overlook (MN) is one of the best places along the Mississippi River to view hundreds of migrating tundra swans, and diving and puddle ducks in the fall. The Upper Mississippi River Wetlands has been designated a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance.

Directions: From La Crosse, Wisconsin, take US-14/US-61 west across the Mississippi River, crossing into Minnesota. Turn left onto MN-16W, and left again on MN-26. The overlook is located about three miles south of Brownsville, MN along Highway 26.

Eagles:
Wabasha National eagle Center
Read’s Landing floodplain forest is one of the best places to watch bald eagles in the Midwest.
East of Whitewater State Park.
Weird fact: Hwy 47 is gravel in select places due to flood activity.

Mall of America, lot of people pop up to see it while waiting for their test results and stuff.
But I like Betesys suggestions better (I do not like shopping)

Thank you each and every one of you. I'm sure you have given us way more than we will have time for.

Someone asked "besides teardrops, what else do you like to do?" One thing we really like is to find those very special and unique places to eat. We like places with lots of local history, family owned, maybe a bit of a dive but with outstanding food, you know, those best kept secrets that only true seekers find. My daughter and I once drove 867 miles one day for a steak at Dudes Steak House in Sidney, NE. 13 hours with one stop for gas. It was totally worth it!
