I (usually) try to choose my words carefully, and often don't comment at all because (as my grandma said) I didn't have anything nice to say.

It certainly is not inappropriate to remind people of this from time to time.

The times that I've started to make a post, then decided not to hit submit probably outnumber the ones that make it online. The written word doesn't have any of the emotional clues that most people rely on to determine intent (smilies help somewhat). I believe this type of misunderstanding is what usually causes the feelings that can happen on a forum like this. Good advice can be lost to blunt wording which comes across as gruff, true honor and wisdom can be lost in poor grammar and spelling, and wit and humor can be lost in posts which the reader takes as serious. Our international diversity complicates this even further.

Take the extra time to determine intent and be cautious to judge based solely upon the written word in an internet forum.

BTW - This is the most excellent group of people I have ever had the privilege to converse with online. Mike and the moderators do an excellent job of keeping things in check without undue influence on the forum content. We have a common interest which brings us together, but at the same time we're allowed to express ourselves in a more personal way as well. Almost all of the members also follow the few simple rules that have been set up to ensure civility. This is key to the "feeling" that this forum brings to both member and guest alike. I consider almost all of you to be trusted friends. May the good times continue...

I just thought I would try and do a friendly reminder that the things that we post on the internet are forever.

Not to pick at nits but, I was always taught that nothing lasts forever, and therefore your postings will eventually disappear.

Of course for that probably won't happen until the sun expands and swallows the earth, destroying us all. So, post up anything you like about anyone anytime, the words will only float around for a few billion years.....
