Did 1750 miles from Evans City, PA to Alamagetto, N.M. in 23 hours in a '75 Nova with a 350 Vette engine. Didn't slow down much on that ride.

Did 1750 miles from Alamagetto, N.M. to Evans City, PA in 28 hours on the return trip 2 years later with a box truck towing my 69 Torino. Took a little longer then. 8)

Wasn't much for sleeping in those days!

San Jose CA to Indianapolis Indiana, non stop 46hours. It's horrible driving into the sun rise twice and thinking hey I haven't slept
Probably the reason I hate driving long distance to this day.

From just north of Atlanta to Dallas in nine hours. 783 miles. That's an average of 87 mph, including stops and traffic jams. No tickets. 2001 Audi A4 1.8 four-cylinder turbo. I averaged 24 mpg on that run.

It's about 840mi/12hrs. across TX - Port Arthur to El Paso. How long can you drive in a relatively straight line and still be in the same state? I'd make an exception for the dog leg in Florida - wow that takes forever.

My dad and I drove from Charlotte NC to Needles Cali where we started a tour of the SW. 2170 miles according to Google maps. We only stopped for gas. And while one pumped the other got munchies. Each of us used the facilities while inside. I don't remember how long it took but it was over a day.

Do you guys not use tachographs to control truck drivers' hours?

Over here, driving too long and driving tired is (slowly) becoming the next target for road safety. What research there is shows that it is probably as big a cause of accidents as drunk driving, and with similar levels of driver impairment.

Of course we have much greater traffic density over here, so the likelihood of a momentary lapse being serious, or involving another vehicle, is much greater.

This subject hit the headlines here when a driver fell asleep at the wheel and crashed onto a main railway line, where his vehicle was hit by a high-speed passenger train which derailed into the path of an oncoming freight train, causing 10 deaths (the Selby Rail Crash). The car driver received a 5 year prison sentence, as he hadn't slept at all the night before, which caught a lot of drivers' attention.

Hmm I'm thinking my longest trip without stopping overnight was about 10 hours, from either Asheville, NC to Chicago or Atlanta to Chicago.

But my record is from St. Louis, MO to Atlanta, GA without even pulling off the road for gas or bathroom. When I got to Atlanta it took me a minute to get outta the truck before I could stand up straight. It's about 7 hours and 30-45 minutes straight without stops, can't remember the mileage, maybe 600?

The kicker is that I still had 1/4 of a tank of fuel left... V6 Silverado long bed (34GAL fuel tank).

I remember those days. 8)

Used to work at a service plaza on the turnpike and those guys all carried 3 books, I think a few even had more. I always wondered how they kept them straight. 8)

I used to drive my 4-cyl Mazda/Ranger to and from Durham, NC to Central Florida. That thing had a 20 gallon tank, on the highway I could get 25-26MPG. It had a 500+mi range on one tank, my bladder didn't have that kind of range.

Nope...I think some of the union guys(small percentage of OTR drivers) still use them but the regular OTR trucks don't...the trucking industry has so far successfully resisted using any form of computer logging since if they did, they may havvta pay the drivers a better salary than the the 2-3 bucks an hour they make now.........
