Anyone have a job opening?

Things that don't fit anywhere else...

Postby S. Heisley » Mon Feb 08, 2010 10:38 am

Jim:

Sorry to hear of your plight. I'd try to get that needed one year anyway I could, even if it is working in maintenance with a cut in pay. When you add that $24,000 to whatever salary you get, it'll look pretty good. Also, if you can't get a job there, let the officials know that you'll jump at any job you can get, if and when they need someone. There's always a chance that someone will have to leave in the middle of the year. (Hopefully, you can wait to buy that year you need towards retirement.)

Remember, even if you get retirement, it doesn't mean you have to retire. There are other things you can do, both paid and unpaid.

Times are tough!

Postby eamarquardt » Mon Feb 08, 2010 12:18 pm

Simply put times are tough! Unfortunately the governments here in California (and elsewhere) haven't gotten the message TEA! I recently saw a list of California Government agencies. It, simply put, was obsene! More useless departments than you could shake a stick at! Once one of these useless departments is created, the unions and other special interest groups won't let it go!

The politicians just don't get it! No incumbent will get my vote in the next election!

I was forced (illness) to retire 6 years ago and my SSDI is approximately 1/4 of what I would be making if I were still working. AT&T and Sedgwick CMS (the administrator of the AT&T disability plan) conspired to deliberately and systematically defraud me of the benefits they promised, I worked for, and earned. They are evil!

In spite of the fact that we are putting my two sons through college (one is even "away from home" on my dime) because we planned ahead and my wife has a good income we get by just fine, put money in the bank each month, and my two boys will graduate from college (I hope) debt free.

We sacraficed many years living frugally and investing rather than requiring "instant gratification now".

All I can say to the young is work, earn money, don't spend money you don't have (ie credit cards and loans) and don't spend all the money you do have.

My thoughts go out to all those that have lost their jobs because I also went through that emotional trauma and also had the knowledge that I'd never be able to hold a regular job again.

I do, however, keep busy, am sometimes even productive, and it beats lying in bed wallowing in self pity as AT&T and Sedgwick CMS would have me doing!

Cheers,

Gus

Hopefully you are in a Union. You might seriously watch and be sure those folks who have the longest time have the first chance at a job.............

The tighter things get the more you need to stand as a unit!

Arizona in the middle of the night a month or so back voted out 10 year and seniority.

 Now all you need to prove is that they are using it to get rid of senior "expensive" employees. We still have federal laws that protect older workers and long term employees........... 8)

If more people lived like that the economies would be in far better shape than they are.

Sadley the cost of university (at least up here in Canada) has most young people in huge debt they before they hit the workforce.

At least teaching and education can't be 'off-shored' for cheaper labour like so many other jobs. Corporate greed and government mis-management are destroying the world. I wonder how many jobs could have been saved if every CEO, government official, or politician had to give up half of what they expect everyone else to give up. This year our CEO announced he was going to take his entire annual pay in shares - who other than a CEO can afford to do that??

ssrjim hopefully things work out for you, there should be laws to prevent job cuts of those within a certain period prior to retirement - or at least some sort of mandatory 'buy-out' package.

OUR GOVERMENT is going to bail out AIG for a bounes agian but we are going to layoff teachers this just don't make sence to me. If we dont get the factorys back here we will not come out of this. We will have to take paycuts for our labor but we have to learn not to run out and buy things we can't aford. We have to work Americans at american jobs.

File a law suit claiming anything even discrimination of older employees that cost too much. The law suit will take over a year but they will have to keep you employed for that time.

Don't know all the laws but Lou's advice sounds logical to me..

I've been out of work for 3 years! Had to quit due to an injury, went back to school full-time to get a new degree and graduated just in time for the economic crash. Plus I'm in a position where I couldn't hold a job if one were offered today.. not until I have back surgery and recover from that.

Best wishes and good luck to you! And to everyone out of work and still looking!

Jim, I'm sorry to hear about your plight. It's a tough time to be a teacher. A lot of people are losing their jobs. This recession is far from over. (Next, thanks to our huge government deficit spending, will come unbelievable inflation!).

With your skills, surely there is a district somewhere in the greater Phoenix area that would welcome you!?!
God Bless

Cliff
