The only type of protection I pay for is Malwarebytes. (Malwarebytes.org) The free version is a great scanner, but the full version gives you real time protection and scheduled scans maleware / adware. Costs $24.95 for life, not per year, but as long as they choose to support it. No bloat. Got the "Fake Anit-Virus" malware one time out of the blue and like to never got it's fingers untangled from my "stuff"! That was enough for me. The Malwarebytes stops more than the AV does. It's the little buggers that seem to get you and slow your pc down. Kind of like campin', it's not so much the snakes as it is the skitters, chiggers, and gnats that mess with ya.

A word of advise; IF you ever get the fake av pop up on your screen, don't touch anything!!! If you choose cancel, or the "x" in the upper corner, it's all the same as clicking OK. We had this pop up on a pc in the nurses office, she didn't touch it but came and got me. We shut down the pc, fired it back up and it was gone.

Had a co-worker that her husband couldn't open a file that was emailed (hi-jacked) to him at home at home (he likes fantasy football) so he sent it to her at work to see if she could open it....... she did. :x Needless to say, this was the pc that held all the scheduling software for the nursing division. Took about three days to get it "operational" again. :? Had to end up wiping it to fix it right though.

Isn't Windows Defender the new name for Microsoft Security Essentials? :?

Defender is to help prevent spyware and adware. Security essentials is defender stuff plus antivirus. A subtle but important difference. I usually have everyone I know use security essentials.
