Do I have a groin pull or a hernia?

Things that don't fit anywhere else...

Postby cracker39 » Tue Apr 18, 2006 9:33 pm

Yup, don't sound like a hernia to me either. I had two, like Coop, one on each side. The 2nd one was easier with the surgery, as they developed a new technique that didn't require such invasive cutting as the first.

I don't remember how I got the 2nd one, the the first was from picking up and carrying VW engines by myself...don't try that...EVER.

ok I am a registered Nurse, free advice .......probably not a hernia, likely a groin pull , possibly a swollen lymph node ( they swell to stop an infection from spreading.....for a while .....then the infection gets into your bloodstream ......Big problem)....See a doctor.........Me anything that close to the "family jewels " calls for immediate action! 8)

Ira

It's unlikely that most women would be disgusted (or turned on) by your description....

Having said that...

A hernia is a tear in the muscle of the wall covering the intestine; this muscle keeps the "innards" from spilling "outwards". Once torn, a bit of the intestine can protrude, causing a bulge that is often reducible by pressing on this. Any straining (i.e, lifting stuff, a trip to the bathroom) can increase the tear, increasing the bulge. Once the initial tear is done, there is often little or no pain (a bigger risk is that if a large amount of intestine is protruding, this can twist on itself, cutting off blood supply and dying, running the risk of gangrene setting in.)

The area where you describe your pain is a bit low for a hernia. Sounds more like a muscle tear or strain. Or an irritated ligament.

Thanks again for all of the input, folks. It's real early Wednesday morning, and it seems like the pain has "moved" down--meaning the upper thigh, but away from the family jewels.

This makes me believe it's a pull.

I'll give it a week, but I STILL have to finish those dang fenders this weekend.

Ira, If you drink enough Bud the pain will lessen. However if you're working on the fenders with power tools, a new set of pains might arise.

Was painfull to sit for any length of time or to walk any lenght of time. I never had pain in my back. I'm not a doc but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express. Good Luck. Kens

Yes you can. Its called a herniated disc. Its a rupture of the disc between the bones of your spine.

Guy's I am going to violate the inner sanctium for a min.

Ira, you don't have to have a full blow out to get the kind of pain you are having. Mike has spinal stinosis and it has caused him to have 3 bulging disc. He had pain like yours off and on for years and the test was too expensive. Now the solution is some very painful surgury and several weeks off work.

He isn't allowed to squatt to pick up a piece of paper because it pinches the nerves. He can still lift, if he doesn't squatt or lean over to do it. Get it!

Please see your doctor before you get any older or damage something irrepairable. I am really not trying to scare you but it isn't worth the chance.

OK. Door closed again.

This must be contageous. I guess I must have pulled something too. This morning, I had a twinge in the left side of my back, above the kidney area. By 3 PM, it developed into a pain, so I put some icy hot on it. Now, at 5PM, it's a major pain. It hutrs even worse if I lie down, and it hurts to breathe in any position. I didn't do any lifting or even any hard work today on the TTT, just some piddling around with socket covers and fitting my tongue box lid. I sure hope this gets better soon.

If the pain just keep getting worse, think kidney stone. It will not get better without help. Get to the doc. Have someone drive you, the pain can hit hard enough to make you pass out. You don't want to be behind the wheel if that happens.

Been there, done that a couple of times, that is why you find bottles of water all around my house. Keep the kidneys flushed all the time.

Ahem.

Ira.

You may have hurt your back. Several years ago I had to give up wrasslin' sheets of chipboard onto roof decks two at a time by myself. Not that I was proud of being able to do anything like that or anything, but it did kind of put a dent in my self-esteem . :R

What *really* banged my feelings around were the six months of physical therapy for the pinched nerve/torn muscle above/behind the right hipbone.
The only pain I ever had made me think I had a(nother) kidney infection.
The cheap fix for kidney infections is tons of fluid -- not lots of alcohol or caffeine -- for several days at a time. If you can stand the taste drink as much unsweetened cranberry juice as your belly will hold.

There's not any cheap fix for the torn muscles/pinched nerves.

No, I don't think it's akidney because it's higher than he kidney area. And, I feel it worse when I bend at the waist (in any direction). (it's like the old joke...patient says "Doc, it hurts when I do this"...doctor says "Well, don't to that")

Last night, I couldn't lay on my back, so my wife gave me one of her darvons and I relocated to a recliner in the living room with a heating pad on my back. This was about 9PM. I watched TV for an hour, then fell asleep. I woke up at midnight, the back felt better, so I went back to bed and slept until after 7AM with no pain. Not sure which did the trick, the darvon or the heat...maybe both. This morning, I can still feel it, but not as bad as last evening.
