Today we had limited time available but went out for a fairly fast 4 mile snowshoe... with another couple. They are a little less fit, so Laurie and I wore our weight vest.

We might do a mountain bike snow ride tomorrow.. :thinking:

I teach Tae Kwon Do two nights a week and run or mild workouts on off days. Trying to keep up with the kids help keep my mind working as well as my body. Quite a workout. :lol:

Just the walk tonight. I used to love skating, but the skates available outside a rink when I was growing up, not good on anything but perfectly smooth cement, which doesn't exist anywhere in quantity.
Blades are supposed to be good even on bad pavement, but I never tried, as the ones that are made for an adult to actualy use seem to start (last I checked) at $70, and I didn't want to spend that much and find out they aren't actualy that good, or I just don't like them.
Anyone have input?
I used to have dreams of being a MA (or at least self defense) instructor, but it wasn't to be, or I'd be one by now

:lol: yeah once you have them on your shoulders.. and heading towards the vehicle.. [pride wise... it would be hard to change one's mind then] :lol: I would think getting a sack onto each should would have been tough also. I think I would have rather down one 100 pound bag vs 2 50's.

I skate on pavement that could be better....of course smoother pavement is nicest, but I take whatever I can get. I don't know much other than put them on your feet and go, but I bet Paul could give some better insight.
I'm thinking I might be due for a new pair this spring.

Paul is into roller skates not inliners.. :thinking:

I don't really know anything about them.. but yeah they do pavement. doing on the road is not real big here but people do it.

I not knowing how to skate am not interested in the road.. flat is bad enough.. I don't need hills yet.. or cars.. or the road crown.. :no:

phew.. I am done todays workout.. an 18 mile mountain bike ride on snow.

It was pretty good until the groomer came through.. they left us soft stuff that was often a real slog to get through. Hole were covered and filled in with soft stuff..

Our total time out, was 2 hours and 37 min. my average pulse was 152 and my peak was 170


I kind of bonked with a few [uphill] miles left to go...

this ride.. there were 7 of us.. one person.. mid to latter 30's.. One in his latter. The rest in their 50's. Where the heck are all the kids.. :thinking: :no:

Yup, im an old fashioned quad skater...
My calves have over developed to the point where my downhill ski boots no longer fit from the ankle up.. :lol:
Thats ok.. I think it takes more skill to be good on quad skates VS inliners. Inlines put alot of stress on your ankles if you cannot stand on them square. I see tons of kids at the rollerrink with knees almost touching and ankles collapsed. That has to hurt.. I have pretty much no desire to skate on inlines. If your going to skate outside (sometimes even inside) wear some head protection and wrist gaurds minumum, elbow and knee pads would be a bonus..road rash can leave nasty scars.
TGhe only way to get good at it is to go out and do it. practice practice practice.. Ive eaten alot of maple floor learning tricks etc on my rollerskates. learning to fall down helps, dont land on your hands if at all possible! always take a shoulder, or butt or forearm..theres alot of little bones in your wrists that break easy. Im pretty sure from experience that they dont heal up sometimes..Mine ache daily..

No rinks here, or much sidewalk, either, just hottop, which I doubt would be conducive to a good skating experience. If I do try inlines, I'd need to know a decent brand (no skate shaped objects) :lol:
As far as calves, mine have always been huge (easy gainer with weights, too, at least on lower body.
No workout today, Sunday will be my 'off' day. Spent that time playing with Buddy, my 50# Border Collie/Lab mix. Honestly, I think this was more exercise than my exercise program, :lol: and a boatload more fun I really ought to roughhouse with him more, he loves it.

theres 8 rinks in houston but that looks like a bit of a drive..once a week might be doable.
rollerblade brand seem to be popular here. Good fit and good wheels and bearings are probably more uimportant than brand..
Harder wheels roll easier but can be less grippy than softer wheels, softer wheels roll harder.If you really want a workout put a set of sure grip aerobic outdoor wheels on your rollerskates and hit the road, they roll hard. so soft they get flat where they meet the pavement. equialent to running in knee deep water workoutwise...

Not ready for that much challenge yet. Houston or austin, either is a near 100 mile drive.
Need for crash pads is the main problem. skate on the street here, you'll catch a peice of gravel or some such and eat road No street sweepers here.
Tonight's workout did my walk and bodyweight routine.
Still thinking about skates, jsut don't think they'd work. Bike might once I get more fit and get a good bike. Wife still wants a trike

I bailed on doing anything yesterday [workout wise] I was still pretty wiped, from Sundays workout. My left knee was also a little tender, and my other snowshoe partners also wimped out.

My inline skates are the Rollerblade brand. I have no idea what I paid, but they were purchased at a smaller locally own sporting goods chain.

If one can skate.. I don't think you need pristine roads. It is not huge here.. but people do skate our roads. I know people that scream down some of our hills at 40mph [which I think is nuts].

Not knowing how to skate.. I want FLAT terrain. As I said if I try summer skating I would head to some of the school tracks.

As busy I am with cycling and other activity.. I am unlikely to do that.

I would like to ice skate... but as I said outside on lakes. We often don't have good ice for that, it is more often covered in snow.

I'm trying to talk hubby into skates this spring. We had fun ice skating, so I'm thinking this might be possible. He seems somewhat receptive to the idea. :twisted:
