Hello threadies!
Cold and rainy at the doghouse. I'm fine with that. The primary lake my town draws water from is only 5 feet low, which is much better than the 16 feet low it was on January 1.
I just put my tow vehicle up for sale. I will miss it terribly, but my extended warranty is running out, and the cost to extend it more is just too high. Owning a twin turbo, all wheel drive, height-adjustable air suspension vehicle with no warranty is just too risky. My dad made me a killer offer on his (boring) Volvo XC-70. So, it looks like I'll be a 50-year-old Volvo driver.
The silver lining is that the car he is buying is badass. I call first dibs when he sells it.
My dad is buying this car as an 80th birthday present to himself. I've been encouraging him to go balls out. He is still a very capable driver, but that can change, so my advice to him is go for the gold on this car. It is entirely possible this could be his last car, so go ahead and get that loaded, Supercharged Audi A6. Spend some of my inheritance on the kind of car you've always wanted.
My dad is a very frugal millionaire. But, every now and then, he listens to me, the art major. He bought the boat I told him to buy, and LOVED it. He has been borrowing my cars to go to the store for years, when I visit, because "they were parked behind his car."
He's been talking to me on a regular basis on this new car, since I know cars. I love how he is actually being a little bit like me. His hidden caseydog is coming out.
My dad is old. My wish for him is to live well until he dies. That's what I hope everyone does, whether they live to 80, 100, or only to 40. Live well until you die.

yes Live well until you die...

how ever that may be for you.
I am glad your father is still able to.... and able to buy a nice car and enjoy it. While everything about it was on a much lower scale.. I remember Laurie talking about her mother, wondering if she should buy a new car.... she was elderly but still could safely drive..Her other car was getting old... she had the money.. why the heck not.
My mother is smart with her money.. but not overly frugal.. she is in her later 70's and will be heading to Bonaire next month on a Scuba diving trip...

Since my dad retired, I've been the devil whispering in his ear. Go ahead and get the better boat, go ahead and get the supercharged engine. I never got to spend much "play time" with my dad when I was a kid, he was too busy building a successful career. So,since he has retired, and has noting he HAS to do, I've been taunting him with his caseydog side. He rode my first SeaDoo, and went out to buy one. Sadly, his cheap side kicked in, and he bought a WetJet for 600 bucks less. It sank. He learned a painful lesson. He rode in my boat, and bought a boat of his own, and bought the boat I told him to buy. He loved it, and it didn't sink.
When the time comes that I don't think it is wise for him to drive, I'll tell him so, and he'll listen. I'm the black sheep of the family, but he trusts my judgement anyway. It's a weird relationship. But for now, I want him to go large and enjoy the fruits of his labors.
I have a feeling he's going to have that new car by the end of the day tomorrow. It's a cool car, and the price is right. 310 horsepower and all-wheel drive. Go dad, go!
