And in the "I didn't know that" category comes something I recently learnt - the Smithsonian was founded from the will of a British chemist called Smithson. He felt he hadn't been treated well in his native England, so he vowed to give his money away somewhere else - and half a million dollars was a lot of money in the mid-1800s.
