Neighbors 1921 KEB 2 Mahogany Boat Restored

Postby Classic Finn » Fri Sep 26, 2008 10:01 am

If you folks remember I mentioned that our neighbor has completely restored ground up a 1921 Swedish Mahogany Boat. Here is the website of the photos of it. It took him a total of 17 years to complete since it was in such bad shape however he finally got it completed. Out of the 17 years it basically sat 5 years since he was abroad for quite sometime.

But its a beautiful boat. Back to its old glory.

He,s the gentleman that gave us the old stove.

Hope you enjoy the photos.

There is a bit of info in English about the Society as well.

I love old wooden boats... and victorian houses...

Everytime I think about owning one and taking care of it, I just feel tired.

That is truly amazing. And a great design, as well. I retired from ChrisCraft so I can really appreciate the craftsmanship involved in bringing that boat back to life. That gentleman should be teaching his art.  :applause: :applause:

When I stopped at his house he has a little office in his house and he showed all of his Awards and Trophies that he has won.. just a beautiful collection of photos, awards and so on there.

The story he told about it and how he found it was like this:

A gentleman that was working for him owned this boat. On a fall day they lifted the boat out for dry dock for the winter. While lifting with a huge crane the lifter arm malfunctioned and dropped the entire boat with the arm on the crane smashing it right down the midsection.

The restoration had not even started then but were in the plans. Well the previous owners plans went down the drain and of course he lost interest in it all together.

He sold it to our neighbor since he had interest in it for years. However during previous offers to him he in noway wanted to sell.

The accident that occured made him change his mind. Our neighbor is an architect and building engineer now retired..

He jokingly said that he could give it a go and try rebuild all. Thats when the story on this boat began. and Now after all these years this shows the craftsmanship our neighbor has. Which certainly Im jealous of .. :)

This same man is now helping me on a few things on our tear. And of course I cant say no ..

Its even nicer in real life than what it is in the photos. Didnt get a chance to go for a cruise this summer however I did visit it at the dock.

Just awesome. The feeling of beeing inside is an experience for sure. The old time style and the beautifully done mahogany inside and out.

I,ll see if I can get some photos of what it looked like way before its total rebuild.

I know that he has some available.

Here is a short Description

The Saloon Cabin KEB 2 is originally off the drawingboard of the well known Swedish Boat Designer C.G. Pettersson. Pettersons boats are well known in Scandinavia as the Aristocrat Pleasure Boats.

The 1921 KEB 2 still has the fast motorboat eye appealing features.

This translation is from a magazine that I have here on this boat and owner.

Also states that all original wood for the frame was used as it was in great condition.

That's quite an amazing shape - it's got a strange mix of inland and sea-going design features. But beautifully done.

The interior is just wonderful - and the toilet is best of all, a work of art in its own right - I would happily mount that on my sitting room wall, just to admire it!

But I don't want to go onto the foredeck - those sidedecks just curve up into the heavily-cambered foredeck and both surfaces seem to have that high gloss finish that guarantees that you'll slide over the side with real speed....

Wow, Heikki, what a wooden wonder. And to think I feel bad if I have to sand and revarnish a little bit. whew. That is really a work of art.

What an absolutely magnificent craft! Those old wooden boats are such a treasure and it's great that you have someone so close to you that has restored one. As a subscriber to Wooden Boat magazine...I hope the story shows in an upcoming issue...it should! I think a lot of people don't really recognize history when they see it. Same thing with a WW2 aircraft. A 90 year old power boat out on the water....just doesn't get much better than that! If you start playing around with wooden boats and get to know some of the people involved in the restoration of originals...it's an education, and a humbling experience. Makes me want to pull out the plans on a day cruiser that I bought a couple of years ago... Doug

Weird, I think I saw this same build in the DIY section of another website I frequent. Him and his son must post at a lot of places. I think it was the son that posted what I saw.
