Room to Build!!

Postby Spotman » Sun Feb 22, 2009 8:37 am

OK, I see so many builds going on in the garage of many builders! Where did you put all the other stuff that was in the garage? Don't tell me that I am the only one with a "TWO" car garage that has only room for two bikes!

Are you hiding a BIG shed out back? All these years of collecting stuff and making things have taken a toll on work space.

Trying to part with "stuff" is really hard. I need the space for the next project, 5x10 trailer, that won't leave the back yard and fit in the garage! :?

Weather permitting (and time), should I just make a dump run, trash day pile or yard sale? I don't know why my wife calls me a "Pack Rat" sometimes!

Please help... is there a 7 step program I have to go through?

Or should I just sell everything and buy from a great builder/owner here on this site? There are many great Tears for sale here.

The first thing I did when I built my new shop was to NOT put up any extra bench space. I have ONE 2'x8' benchwith a vise on it, thats it. If I had more bench space it would be filled with "stuff" only other work platform is a 2 ft x 4 ft steel welding table on casters. I have a small shed out back thats jammed with stuff but not unacessable. I also have a row of decent cabinets, that helps alot and keeps the little junk out of your hair. I had to talk the wife into putting her crap in her space, that only took one try. She is a pack rat and holds onto alot of JUNK! When she sees her crap out on the berm she gets upset and i tell her to store it in her own space, she has the entire house, most of the shed out back plus the bathroom, I at least should have my own area. She has ample room to park her car in the shop at all times, its part of the deal. I also tend to not hold onto anything I have no use for or ever hope to have a use for. My pickup sits outside in the summer...Good luck dude, I feel for ya! Paul

One thing I forgot to include is the neighbor and I get long really well and share the same hobbys so we spend alot of time working togather. We both have fair sized shops but we have alot of room sucking stuff so we are constantly juggling cars, boats and teardrop trailers. We tend to do alot of the work in my shop and store stuff at his place. We are skilled packer inners... lololol

Hmmm. why do we pack-rats have the same problem? My solution has been to build a "movable" shed, 8 x 10 ft, plywood floor and walls, painted up cute to match the house. No building permit needed, just 4x4s under the floor, acting like skids if the need arises. Now all of my junk is inside and there is room in the "double garage" to handle my construction projects again. Hey, it works for me.

:) Everyone... thanks for the positve and non-positive thoughts on this. I know it's hard to move(throw) things out, the trailer frame is sitting in the back yard waiting for better weather to attack the garage. Calling for snow/rain(mostly rain) this weekend.

Creamcracker,

My wife's basement/garage/ attic looks just like your garage...

I had to buy a shop 35 miles from home so she couldn't get to it.

In the 8 years that we have owned this house I have emptied the attic, basement and garage 3 times (and I mean empty) and she has filled them again.

I gave up so now I work away from home.

I by no means am the most organized person out there, but I like to get things done, so I have to have a fairly clean / organized work space.

I just can't Handel spending an hour looking for tools or parts to do a half hour job. Work is hard enough I try not to agitate the problem.

I have a simple rule, If it is not a tool and I haven't used it in 6 months I either sell it or throw it away (or give it to some one).

So my friends RENT a Dumpster and get rid of the junk... Sell things of value you don't need.. and reclaim your work shop....

Here's a simple solution - move everything that's in the way into the house - preferably the kitchen or bathroom - but the living room will do in a pinch. it will become painfully apparent what should be kept and what can can be stored in other places rather quickly.

I am looking at rental spaces near my home. Quite a few good priced ones including heat/ac. I need to get started building!
