Legit email or no

Postby Classic Finn » Wed Nov 18, 2009 5:22 pm

I thought we would ask about this: Wife received an email via her website recently and there the client nicely introduces themself and from where they are.

In this case it was from Japan. There the "client" shows interest in some of her products. Which really made the wife happy, however we would like to know how to verify this email as to its authenticity and so on.

They ask for shipping prices, packaging and amounts. No bank account numbers were asked for or such.

How does one know if its not an email that is so called phishing for info?

It looks real and authentic but how does one know?

I don't know the answer to that question, but you could contact your ISP and ask if they can trace/verify it for you. I am just guessing here.

Hi Kerry, thanks for the reply. We do have an admin section on the web where it shows the entry from and leaves the url.

The introduction states that they are from Osaka, Japan.

It could be legit or it could be a scam, these days you never know. I don't sell anything over the internet (except the occasional item on eBay) so I'm not an expert at this. Just use your common sense and be diligent in checking these people out if they do want to order something.

If they wind up making a deal, then want to send a check for more than the price and ask you to send back the difference, it's a crooked scheme. There will be trouble with their check, while yours is good.

Also some email programs, notably Outlook Express, allow you to right click on the incoming message, which hands you a small menu. One choice there is "Properties," and clicking that gives you a flood of letters and numbers that sometimes yields a clue, for instance the country of origin and the number of people it was sent to.

Hope it's legitimate.

To scam or not to scam?

Postby eamarquardt » Wed Nov 18, 2009 6:00 pm

I don't think it's all that complicated. Give them any sales, shipping, pricing information they request unless it's confidential.

If they order, get money up front, work with your bank to ensure that any form of payment you receive is valid and irrevokable, and ship only after you have assurance from your bank the funds are permanently in your hands.

Also you might consider filling a few small orders first before completing any large orders with them.

Let common sense prevail and you'll be ok.

If it seems too good to be true, it usually is.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Gus

I agree. Give them any pricing and shipping info. Tell them up front that any payment has to pass muster before you ship. They should understand if they are legit. Scamming is international.

hiya Heikki...a couple of thoughts...enter the email address into Google and see what it returns...do they have PayPal over your way...if so, set up an account with them and have buyer pay through them...it'll cost ya 3% of amount for them to process the sale but that can be added to the price charged and it will protect you(and them)...if they wanna do some kinda cash/check thing, state up front, that shipping will be AFTER funds have actually cleared the bank...you might also inquire how they heard of the wife's business...as others have stated, if they make an offet that sounds too good to be true, it probably is...............

I have gotten some interest from Austraila and some other countries. I see no reason to not answer with the appropriate info and let the customer decide to buy or not. Most find it too expensive for shipping. If she sells an unusual or unique product the customer may still be interested. I wouldn't do the money refund or exchange scam and I'd require paypal or credit card and stay away from check.

Use your common sense.

BTW, what does she sell?

If they asked for all that right off the top I'd say be very leary.....that's how they get you to start giving them info.
Ask for a verifiable name and phone number, if they are reluctant it is probably a scam.

But try to be a little nice....it just might be legit.....you wife does have some nice stuff after all!

Just keep in mind NO Western Union!!!! If they mention that at any time run!
