Which Linux for Windows user?

Postby mikeschn » Sat Jun 09, 2012 5:12 pm

What's a good version of Linux to try if you are a die hard Windows user?

I am trying Zorin OS now, and it's pretty attractive, and pretty Windows like... Is there something else I need to look at?

Which Linux for Windows user?

I've put Ubuntu on several machines with great success. Super easy install with tons of drivers.

I use Fedora at home. Haven't installed it on this laptop as of yet, but will soon.

+1 for Ubuntu

You can create a bootable CD to run it from if you don't want to set up a dual boot system, or you can set it up to launch from within Windows.

+2 for ubuntu. I've played with it, and my son has been using it for a long time.

Ubuntu is the one. By far the least trouble to get up and going.

Hard drive kersploded. no windows boot disk made. Pain in the butt to get one. So using wife's puter made Ubuntu boot disk. New hard drive from box store and half an hour total. Old drive out new drive in Ubuntu installed. You need to sudo the libraries to get the dvd player working with encrypted disks (open source and free they are not going to pay the license fees for it) but the commands are easy to find on the interwebs.

Using Zorin as I type...
It is a ubuntu version...
So far, so good...I haven't had any issues with other programs yet...

Linux/ubuntu in general has a little learning curve, but like I said, so far so good....

Another vote for Fedora! http://fedoraproject.org/
I use it on my desktop and laptop. My wife and I run a small business, and we have some intellectual property to protect. We use the encrypted file system option to beef up security. No worries about internet nasties stealing our manufacturing process. :D

I second Mint. It's probably the nicest desktop distribution out there. Personally, I am a fan of Slackware, but that one is not for everyone.
