LED Question

Postby Chris C » Sat May 27, 2006 10:24 pm

Does one have to put anything between the battery and an LED other than wiring? I don't know much about electric................but I know even less about LED's!

A switch would be nice, so you could turn it off and on.

All Led's need a resister in line. If your buying them to make your own fixture be sure they come with them already soldered on. I bought some off ebay because the price was good. When I recieved them the resister's was with them but not soldered on.
A led fixture will already have them built in.

Chris,

Technically speaking, there must be a resistor between the battery and LED lights when they are powered by 12 volts because all LEDs work on approximately 1.5 volts. Having said that, if you buy a 12 volt LED fixture, the resistor is already built in, or there are enough LEDs to be wired in series to handle the voltage.

Okay, so if I buy LED marker lights, they should already have the resistors in them?

Here's a calculator to figure what resistance you need.

Or you can buy LEDs that have the resistor with them. I've had good luck with www.superbrightleds.com

Not too bad Chris, only 8 responses to your question before getting the answer you were looking for. Some threads that never happens :D

The resistor answers were very informative, but it was a good thing you didn't ask something difficult, like adding an incandescent 3rd brake light to LED tail/turn/stop lights.
