Couple neon light questions

Postby Aaron Coffee » Sat Mar 19, 2011 7:51 pm

Traded a battery for a set of undercar neon lights and wondering if there should be a convertor/ballast or if it is internal to the lights. I have hooked the lights up to a 12 volt supply and they light up so I am assuming that any convertor/ballast is internal. I am thinking of mounting them under the td.
Thanks

Most of the neon kits for cars have the ballast built in, at least the ones my son had been looking at. Here in NJ they are not legal while driving so I managed to talk him out of them.

Yep thats what I did, too. My dad bought a pickup that had them on so I bought him a battery for his pickup in exchange for the neons, they are blue and here bluw lights are illegal on moving vehicles. My thought is that they will make a good nighttime light to see the area around my teardrop.

They might use more current than you want to "spend" in a teardrop. Automobiles have no shortage of amps, and accessories can be profligate with the watts.

The entire energy budget for my TD is 875 mA.

That's why I used LEDs. Some of the older neon kits had external transformers wired in series to the tubes, but newer ones have them built into the tube. Not sure, but I think you can buy them either way.

asianflava,
I'm planning on some LED lighting similar to what you did on my TD. Where did you get yours and how much did you use. I think that is will be a great alternative to a "porch" light for me.
Sorry, I don't mean to hijack away from neon.

Thanks,
Brian

Some folks said that it looks like a spaceship so I installed a hover system. It makes it really easy to find the trailer in a dark campground.

I bought 2 sets from eBay because I didn't know how bright they were. Just search "Undercar LED" on eBay. After installing one set I decided it was bright enough. I gave the other set to Dave and Cindy (Bluebonnet Tear).

just hit the remote and turn on your neon lights on your way back from the campground bathroom.

I have one, but I never hooked it up. Now I don't know where it went.

I like the idea for the lights as a safety device as for the remote control if the kit doesnt come with it one can easily be installed for cheap

I put LED light tubes under mine also, red of course. I also put some LED pod lights on my hatch. Attracts less bugs at night and doesn't screw with your night vision. :D

it would not wake up other campers show your teardrop up great and if bettor half was sleeping she would keep on snoozing as it would not be a head light effect.

any thoughts on a remote set up if possible.

I don't have light switches on my trailer.... just a 2 channel remote system. One channel for interior and galley lights, the other channel for exterior lights.

Here's the thread for it...
