LED Backup Lights?

Postby Thomcat316 » Tue Jun 07, 2011 7:29 am

I was looking for a backup light option for my trailer that wasn't likely to utterly blind folks in neighboring campsites, but still puts out just enough light to do the job.

I settled on these lights from Optronics as a good compromise, but would like feedback from anyone who owns them already...

Thanks!

I'm surprised you selected those Optronics lights because the web site says very clearly that they are not certified for use as back-up lights.

Just sayin'

...nice lights and would probably work...personally, I would look at some of the options for led lighting found here R&P Carriages ...they have a large selection, are great folks to deal with and get my AAA+++ rating as a vendor......................

The federal requirements for trailers do not require backup lights so I don't see why any lights would have to be certified.

I wouldn't give it a second thought. I poked around and couldn't find any "retail" outfit that appears to stock them so you'd have to contact Optronics and see who they sell em to.

Cheers,

Gus

Went with etrailer.com - good selection, free shipping (over $150), and even though I got a $300 order in to them at noon on Monday it will be here from MO today. Simplest and best experience I've had so far, with Frank Bear from Vintage Technologies being a close second.

I did decide to go with the lights I'd been asking about, even though I know they're not likely as bright as the "certified" backup lights, primarily because they aren't - as I said in the original post, I'm looking for something a little dimmer to not annoy folks in neighboring sites if I arrive after dark.

The temporary "get it on the road" expedient is a set of standard LED boat trailer lights mounted on the fender brackets, with the backup lights being mounted under the trailer behind the wheels. Eventually I'll fab a set of light nacelles/boxes that will be adhered to the lower rear curve of the trailer and look something like Slowcowboy's setup, but using four oval lamps per side - red tail/brake, amber turn, and two intensities of white (with a switch to select).
